How do you get roaches out of your luggage?

This HAS to be the #1 funniest post for 2005!
Years ago, hubbie & I were in the Everglades. While taking a shower, I heard this loud thump. I asked hubbie what he had killed. "Oh, nothing," he replied. He didn't tell me until after we had left, it was a huge cockroach in my luggage.
Later in the evening, I had to use the facilities and turned on the lights and we saw many "creatures" crawling out from the ceiling. That was enough for me. We left the following morning.

OK, we're telling roach stories? Many years ago when Phil Flash and I were traveling on an extremely restricted budget we stayed in a very funky hotel in Bodrum, Turkey. There were very large beetles in the room and the toilet. We called them beetles the entire time we stayed at this hotel, in a strange sort of folie a deux. It was only after we had been gone for several days that one of us said to the other, "You know, those weren't beetles."

Ok, well this isn’t a roach story and it wasn’t in Hawaii – it was in my own home here in MA!!!!
We’d only lived here (in the US) for just over 6 months and we hadn’t discovered all of the wildlife that we have now come to expect.
One night on the way to bed I came out of the bathroom and flying up the stairs towards me was an enormous bug – Ok, if I’m honest it was only 2, potentially 3 inches long, but big by UK standards. It was buzzing loudly as it bounced manically off the walls, its eyes were huge – and it was heading my way
I really did want to calmly say to DH, “Excuse me, Darling if I could have your help? There is an insect flying towards my and I’m really not happy – Please could you deal with it?”
Instead I shot back inside the bathroom slamming the door behind me and locked it while shouting “BIG BUG! BIG BUG!” and you can bet that I made sure to lean against the door to make sure the thing couldn’t get in!
Boy, was I teased for the rest of the summer

Not to sound like someone who would disparage Kauai...you know who you are...but our rental car 2 weeks ago in Kauai had roaches...ugh I am also phobic but not as bad as Mrs Goatman. I was coaxed into the car by my husband, actually he threatened to just leave me behind. My skin crawled the entire time spent in the car. I was also warned if I felt or spotted one while we were driving I was not to cause an accident. Good thing I didn't because I can't control my reaction. I can so relate to the roach in the hair table on fire fiasco! It is a good thing this post wasn't here right after I got back or I would have been afraid to unpack. It didn't occur to me that one of those babies I saw could have crawled in the suitcase...ugh. I experienced the other roaches the 1st time in Oahu age 18 in the 70's. Our group saw some construction workers pickup stuck in the mud in Honolulu. We all ran over and gave a push and after he was unstuck he grabbed a baggie from the glove compartment and tossed it over to us and drove off! I guess that is when my love of the aloha spirit got started..hey it was the 70's, I was young and reckless!

This thread has resurrected my recurring nightmare. In my dream a cockroach went into my ear, made it's way through my brain, and came out the other ear. I was so relieved when it came out, until the doctor told me it was female. What if she laid eggs????

Last night during a pitching change delay- I switched on the channel H&G looking for this house sale I was interested in and hit the Emergency ER (reality) show. You guessed it, they were trying to get this huge flying roach type insect (only it was white- huge- some kind of flying beetle) out of this poor woman's ear.
They drenched it in liquid xylocaine and killed it that way before removal. She had to lay there for twenty minutes while the liquid did its job.
She was hysterical.
I kept thinking about this thread and phobias. jeeeesch!

AAACCCCKKKKKK!!!
A giant palmetto bug flew in my bed last night about 3AM.
The kitties immediately came out from under the covers and went into full attack mode.
Jen Kitty swatted and walked off.
Big Kitty ignored the roach and went to eat.
Sigh. Roach is hiding in my home.

Kauai, Schmauai...I rode in a roach-infested taxi in DC once, many years ago. The Horror! I didn't notice my fellow-passengers until we were on the highway, so I couldn't exactly jump out, although that is what every fiber of my being cried out for me to do.

Alya, when I was newly arrived in the US (from the UK), we went on a summer camping trip to Cape Cod. The first evening, we sat round the picnic table enjoying the lovely evening, and wondering why all our fellow campers had disappeared into screened enclosures of various kinds. Then THEY arrived. The June bugs. Huge, and flying, and no sense of direction. We had no screen enclosure, so fled into town... Now when I hear them on the screens at home, I'm happy -- means summer is here!
And hotel bugs don't have to be big to drive you out. On a trip to Italy, we unwillingly stayed at the very strange Hotel Moroni (we nicknamed it Moronic) in Finale Ligure. We decided it was only for 2 nights, so we would make the best of it. After about an hour of sleep, I was woken by tickly itchy sensations, and discovered the bed was the home to many ants. Not big, just people friendly... ;-)
We left the next morning, and had a great stay in Lake Maggiore instead.

Whip up a batch of the following:
Heloise's Boric Acid Roach Exterminating Formula
8 ounces powdered boric acid
1/2 cup flour
1/8 cup sugar
1/2 small onion, chopped (optional)
1/4 cup cooking oil or bacon drippings
(or more to form a soft dough).
Cream shortening and sugar, mix boric acid, flour and onion. Add to sugar, and oil. Blend well, then add more oil as needed to form a soft dough. Shape into small balls the size of marbles. (If balls are placed in opened, plastic sandwich bags, the dough will stay softer longer.) Place balls throughout the house in places normally inhabited by roaches (any dark, damp corner). Caution: Make sure no children or pet can come in contact with these balls, as it is toxic and keep out of direct contact with any food. When dough becomes brick hard, replace with a fresh batch.

I went to Hawaii once many years ago and never, ever saw a bug of any kind. To this day I comment about that. I guess I was lucky.
While in a bar in New Orleans a few years ago, listening to a jazz band, a HUGE roach came running down the bar. I screamed very loudly and flew off my bar stool. The band stopped playing for a split second and looked at me. The bartender looked at me, looked at the roach, and back at me.....and acted as though I was the one who didn't belong there.
Yikes, maybe cold weather isn't so bad after all!
