Houston, Texas - special birthday dinner

Next week I'll be taking my Mother to MD Anderson for treatments. While we are there, she will celebrate her 72nd birthday. Could anyone suggest an upscale restaurant to celebrate this special occasion? She was there last year at the same time and I believe dined at Mark's and loved it. any other suggestions? thank you.

it kind of depends what part of town you are in and maybe what night of the week you are talking about. La Colombe d'Or is an elegant location on MOntrose somewhat near Mark's. Cafe Annie near the Galleria is a favorite. The Mockingbird Cafe on Welch is nice. Tony's on Richmond is a place for Houston people-watching.

Thank you for your quick response. We will be staying at the Medical Center area, but will use car service to take us to dinner, so location is not a big issue.

Highly recommend Cafe Annie--we ate there just last week and it was fab. Easy drive from the medical center area.

Be sure to secure a reservation.

DaMarco's on Westheimer is lovely and close.
Ouisie's on San Felipe is great.
We have a Jean Georges rest. in the Hotel Icon (downtown) which is good.
And as other posters have mentioned Cafe Annie or Tony's are always wonderful.

All of these are within 15-20 minutes by car from the med center (depending on time of day/traffic of course).

Comparing the restaurants mentioned, which has your favorite atmosphere and attentive service; especially if celebrating a special occasion.

Haven't been to the other places mentioned but we were impressed by the very attentive staff at Cafe Annie.

Aires is in the Montrose District and has wonderful food with beautiful presentation. It is located in an old house made into a restaurant. Great service . Been to Cafe Annies, as well. Food was great but I prefer more atmosphere. Enjoy

We celebrated at Cafe Annie and absolutely loved it! they made us feel very special and welcome. The sommelier was most helpful and so kind.

Katie - thanks for the feedback. It's always appreciated. I missed your earlier post, but would have certainly put Cafe Annie's on the list. I've taken some cooking classes there as well as special dinners and it's never failed to impress. Hope your mom's doing OK.

Yeah! That's exactly how we felt when we were there. What did you think of the atmosphere? We really liked it, thought it elegant and sophisticated. Glad your dinner was what you had hoped for!

If it were me, I would pick Mark's. Best restuarant in the city. Da Marco's is a close second. If you do go to Da Marco's make sure to get a table away from the front door or any plac that looks highly trafficked. I really like Noe. Aries is closed (not that good any way). Jean Georges Vongerichten and Bryan Caswell have left Bank, so I cannot suggest going there. I love Ouisie's, but, based on your criteria, it may be too casual. I am not a big fan of Cafe Annie. Tony's food is excellent, but the see-and-be-seen crowd can interfere with your dining experience.

Katiekate -- hope your mom does ok at Anderson; I will be there end of March. I will bookmark this thread. It won't be by birthday, but I figure anyone who goes to Anderson should have a special night out.

DebitNM: Sorry you have to be at Anderson, but know it's a wonderful place. If it's your first time there and you need any other information, please let me know. We've been going for 5 yrs. It's a BIG place and can be a little intimidating at first.
You might want to add two other restaurants (located nearby in Rice Village): Benjy's and Prego. We enjoy them both and easy to get to. In fact, most of the hotel shuttles will run you over there. Oh, one other place we just learned about this last time was Travisio's. I located on the 6th floor of the Texas Med. Building. We had Valentine's dinner there. It is very upscale and has a beautiful view.
