Hotwire for car rentals. Any problems?

Never used them, but their rates are about 60.00 less for a weekly that it seems silly not to.

Anything I need to be aware of using them?

Hidden fees, anything wierd that I'm not picking up from reading their website? The only thing I see is that you are charged immediately.

Thanks.

I think you should definetely use Hotwire with no hesitation!
I was a bit worried at first as well, because for certain selections like hotel it doesn't specify EXACT places, prices, etc. But for car rental it's the BEST deal!! I always use hotwire for car rentals. Last year took a trip to NJ/NYC and the total was about half the cost of other sites!

I don't believe there were any hidden fees. I really was pleased with the service and def recommend!!!

I use Hotwire for just about every car rental I make. Never a problem. Always a very reputable company, like Avis - never Rent A Wreck or anything like that. Everything is just the same as if you rented directly from the rental company -- except that you pay up front and can't cancel -- and can't earn frequent flyer miles.

I have used HOtwire with NO problems, but I most often use it to get a ballpark discount rate available where I am renting. They give you the taxes and other charges also so you know. Then I bid on Priceline, knowing what these add-ons will be. Only one time was Hotwire lower. I usually save 50% over what an Expedia/Travelocity quote is, for instance.

I've been using Hotwire for car rentals for several years. Always had good service and good cars (they use reputable companies like Budget, Avis, maybe Hertz). Never a problem. Just do realize that your reservation cannot be cancelled.

Hotwire only uses Avis, Budget or Hertz. There shouldn't be any surprises.

Looks like Hotwire is pretty good.

Does Priceline really save you much over Hotwire?

Yes, it can save. You just need to shop it. What can I say.

I've had good luck with Hotwire auto rentals, but will advise you to make sure you've rented for as long as you'll need the car. An extra day on some of my 4 day rentals would have cost more than the 4 days totalled! And of course neither do you get any credit for an early return.

Be aware that you have to stick to the times you enter in the system not just a 24 hour rental.

That is true of any rental I think. You pick up at 3PM, it needs to be returned by 3PM, etc.

No, that's not what we mean.

If you make a reservation for 10pm Friday until 4pm Sunday, your rental is ONLY for that period, and BIG late charges would apply if you kept the car until 7pm. The "24 Hour" rule does NOT apply.

For what it's worth, if you let the rental counter know at the time of pickup that you aren't certain of your return time, they'll jump the time up to make a full 24 hours on your last day -- no extra charge -- at least that's my experience....OR...if you just book it up front for full 24 hour period and just return it early whenever you are ready, the price will be the same (you won't get anything refunded though). Once, I did return late but still within the 24 hour window, and incurred no additional charges - I just wouldn't recommend taking that chance in any rental situation. It could depend on the rental agnecy - I almost always end up with Avis - so perhaps Budget or Hertz have different rules.

We have also used Hotwire for car rentals, but I've found that searching for car rental discount coupons has saved me more than hotwire has on some rentals....so search first before making the commitment. The advantage is booking directly and being able to cancel or earn FF mileage as well.

We've done Hotwire for rental cars twice this summer. One for a minivan and saved at least $150 over every other offer we could find. The only issue was that Avis charged $7/day for me to be an extra driver. The next time was Budget again saved $100 over the next best deal and no charge for me as an extra driver. And no problem with picking up the car late due to a delayed flight. I wouldn't hestitate to use the service again.

I've gotten spectacular rates with Hotwire (always booked along with the hotel room).

No problems whatseover. Well, except for the time that Hertz insisted that a Toyota Corolla was a mid-size car. But, that was Hertz, not Hotwire. And, "for a few dollars more you can upgrade..."

Bennie stated that there was the extra driver charge which can not be anticipated using Hotwire. For some rentals that extra driver charge can make the rental not such a good deal. What have other people experienced as far as extra driver charges? I know some companies allow spouses as extra drivers at no extra charge and some have additional charges.

I'm sorry travelinandgolfin...I've been away from my computer. Just google car rental discount coupon and check out the sites that pop up. I actually used a Hertz discount in Pheonix which was substantially cheaper than the prices that were showing on Hotwire.

Good luck!
