Hotels near Boston General
I will be traveling to Boston in May to see a specialist, I am looking for an inexpensive Hotel or place to stay that we can access the subway or has a shuttle service. I also want to feel safe getting to and from where I am going.

Do you mean Mass General Hospital?
When in May?
What is "inexpensive" for you?
May is graduation month in Boston; if your doctor visit coincides with several commencements, it'll be very difficult to find anything "inexpensive". Please confirm the hospital you need to get to, post your budget and your dates and we can give you some options.

I have to google it to see where it is. It's actually right next to the Bowdoin blue line T stop. the closest hotels (just a few blocks away) are the Holiday Inn on Beacon Hill; or the Bulfinch Hotel.
Since you didn't state your budget, I can't tell if those are affordable for you. The HI Boston is showing a rate of $185 for one night during the week in early may.
This deal on Travelzoo is showing $129/n for Park Plaza. You can take the Green Line from the hotel to Government Center stop, and then a short walk to the voice center.

As yk said, the Holiday Inn on Beacon Hill is very convenient. I've stayed there before and it's a decent place. If you do decide to stay there, check out the Friends and Family IHG discount: http://tinyurl.com/ylqvm24

I've not stayed at the John Jeffries House but it's well located, just about a block from where you need to go so it's probably a good option for you. MGH and MEEI are right by the Charles St T stop on the red line, so it's pretty easy to get there from most neighborhoods in the city.

Just to clarify, the MGH Voice Center that the OP needs to go to, is at 1 Bowdoin Sq; at the corner of Cambridge St & New Chardon Street. http://www2.massgeneral.org/voicecenter/contact/
John Jeffries is right next to MGH; but about 0.5 miles to the Voice Center. It's still pretty close and definitely walking distance, but I want to point out it's not a block from where the OP needs to go.
The holiday Inn and the Bulfinch are about 0.25 miles from the Voice Center @ Bowdoin Sq.

And Bowdoin Square is all uphill from the John Jeffries House, not a steep hill but a hill nonetheless with a lot of traffic that COULD be a problem for someone with health problems that warrant traveling to Boston to see a specialist.

The Holiday Inn on Blossom St is right across the street from Mass General. I've stayed there several times over the years with family members who where having operations at MGH. I've walked from the hotel to the hospital in the middle of the night and felt safe. If you are worried, the security people will escort you I think. The rooms in May start at $209/night. THey used to give a small hospital discount.

I am afraid I initially gave the wrong link for the IHG Friends & Family rate. If you want to stay at the Holiday Inn, here is the correct one: http://tinyurl.com/c7d7jw
It is a pretty good discount.

I know several Fodorites have stayed at the John Jeffries house. they all said it was very convenient and a good value for the money. Not fancy but very clean and comfortable. I thought someone said some rooms have kitchenettes, which might be nice if you're going to be there a while.
