I'm visiting NYC at the end of August with my 6 year old, having reread a trip report i did the last time we visited i was hoping for ideas on hotels around Central Park or Chelsea Piers, ideas for both would work! Not particuarly bothered where except would prefer to be near a subway station! Budget per night is $150-200

Your budget is low for that time or year. I would search quickly to see if you can find any deals before all are gone. if you are willing to pay upfront with no refund you might find better choices.

The Newton - reliable budget hotel on the UWS has a double (one double bed) available for $185 plus tax for your dates. With taxes not far above your budget. It's a non-smoking hotel only a couple of blocks from Central Park, right next to the subway, not far to Mus Nat'l Hist and a great mid/upscale family friendly area.

I'm starting to see that now have done a bit more research, the Newton is looking pretty good, espcially with the refrigerators

Its in a completely different area but Best Western Herald Square is coming in pretty much on budget, anyone know if its any good? (I have loyalty with BW)

Join SniqueAway and also look at Travelzoo.com Sniqueaway has recently had several good NYC hotels with queen or king beds for dates extending into August (with taxes included) for total of around $169 to $200. I've been looking also for August and the ones I have seen are Midtown East, on the 6 line.

If you are near Chelsea Piers you will a long walk from any subway. If you are at Herald Square you will access to just about every subway in Manhattan.

And also, keep getting the Sniqueaway deals and keep checking Travelzoo.com. their hotel deals for late August may not be advertised yet.

With a 6 year old I would definitely want to be in a residential area with a lot of moderate/inexpensive and family friendly restaurants and near the park - not in the center of a mobbed business district - like Herald Square.

Is your 6 year old going to be happy being held by the hand the whole time so you don't lose him/her in the crowds? And with no place to run around for a few minutes - no really doable in Herald Square.

If you could stay on Central Park South that would work (not so far from the Central Park zoo) - but i think that area is over your budget.

The reviews for the Newton look pretty good and expedia has a slightly better rate so think will go with that one

We spend a lot of time in Central London so my DD is used to having her hand held but i agree that being near Central Park would be much more preferable to being in the middle of a Business District

I looked at staying on Stattern Island also but would really prefer to be in the city!

You definitely don't want to be on Staten (not Stattern) Island--but it is "in the city"; it's one of the 5 boroughs of NYC.

I just checked the hotel my DD and I stayed in last year, the Hilton Garden Inn, Chelsea and it's outside your budget ($249/night), although it was VERY close to a subway (1/2 block). Mostly I just wanted to say hi and that I have fond memories of reading your trip report of your adventure around the US a couple of years ago with your daughter. I also wanted you to know I thought of your recently--I had recorded "That's Entertainment" (from 1974!) on my DVR and when Fred Astaire came on when I was watching it the other night, I thought of you. Have a great time in New York--your daughter is a lucky girl!

Staten Island would be a disaster with a six year old.

hoteldeauville is a good place but you have to check the availability before going to that hotel. Park 79 Hotel also come into your budget but surely you have to check for reservation in advance in order to get the confirmed.

Will leave Statern Island then, I'm going to go for The Newton, i checked travelzoo but they only had weekend deals for NYC :/ We have 4 nights in Washington DC after NYC hence the budget not being the highest

Staten Island would be a disaster - would take forever to get to the city. (And "the City" is Manhattan - not all of New York City.)

And Newton is practically on top of the subway - so it's easy to get to anyplace in the rest of the City.

It is near subway, Central Park and Carnegie Hall. It was very basic when we were there but clean and reasonably priced.

I just found out one of the reasons why its wise to book refundable rates as opposed to non refundable, my OH has now decided that he'll join us for this trip, The Newton unfortunately rises by around $200 for a room for 3, for some reason i can't get my head round, this takes the Newton out of the proposed budget but brings the likes of Hilton back in! Would anyone have any suggestions?
