hotels in Las Vegas for family of 3

Hello All,

I got many helpful answers to my Italian food question so now I'm wondering if I could get some more help. Currently we, my wife, 13 year old son and I, have reservations at the Excalibur. The more we read about trip reports from there, the more we feel this is not our place to stay. We will only be in Vegas for 2 days before we head out on a 2 week tour of Utah and Arizona. We are looking for a little more upscale (not so kid oriented) hotel. Although the Trop is older it sounds good - so does the Flamigo and the Rio. Of course we know about the newer places - Mandalay Bay, Ballys etc. Your personal recommendations are welcomed - Many thanks - Sam

I stayed at the Mirage with my family. It was very nice. Next to Ceasars and TI and across from the Venetian. Your son would probably enjoy the race to atlantis virtual reality ride at ceasars. My kids (13 & 11) loved it.

while the rio hotel is nice, i wouldn't stay there cause it is not on the strip. they have shuttles but i'd find that inconvenient. they are suppose to have a good restaurant/buffet though so might be a good place to go for dinner.

On the south strip, you might try MGM or NYNY. MGM offers a great pool area, while NYNY offers a great arcade and coaster ride. Rates will be fairly close for either one. (The Tropicana is adjacent to both as is the Excalibur)
Mid strip, the Flamingo offers a great pool area and aviary, but tends to cater to a little older crowd. (Your balance between parental obligations of watching out for your son versus perhaps personal interests, may be a bit difficult to pull off within a single hotel/casino, that is why I offer suggestions on NYNY and MGM. On the other hand, if you wish to enjoy Vegas with your child, where you stay becomes less important, and in that context, I would recommend good walking shoes and a mid-strip hotel. (the Flamingo or Bally's are well located and good, reliable hotels) You will be able to access other areas via lots of walking and trams where available) The Rio is off-strip and generally caters to the young and "hip" crowd, should that be your ilk.

An open mind, with no pre-conceived notions and sour attitude checked upon arrival, will help make your Las Vegas experience a pleasurable one.

Enjoy your trip!

If I was 13 year old and was visiting LV in the summer I would want to stay at Mandalay Bay or Monte Carlo. They have great pools, with lazy rivers and slides. There is also a tram between MC and Bellagio.

I found the Rio to be great for families, there are so many restaurants, the Masquerade in the Sky is a big hit with all ages, the pools are great, the all suite rooms are large and quite comfortable. And the shuttle is not that inconvenient but cabs are cheap if you want to go to the strip.
I thought of all the hotels on the strip that I would avoid, Excalibur would be one of them.Too noisy and way too many baby strollers and screaming children,no 13 year old will want to be there either.
Try the Mirage,Treasure Island,Ceasars,Mandalay Bay.They all have something for the three of you.Besides, no one under 18 or is it 21? is allowed in the casinos anyway.

Treasure Island usually has some great weeknight website rates in the summer.
This is a good place for a 13 year old. The others in descending order of preference would be

I would also recommend the ORLEANS, which has great rates and is off the strip. It's only a mile or so away and has free shuttle service all day. There are great movie theatres here and a bowling alley and arcade to keep the 13 year old busy. Nice pool too.

Stay at the Mirage... upscale yet affordable.

Nice enough for the adults while fun enough for your son. Also, a great location.

If rates are too high for your dates, the Flamingo is more moderate, represents a great value on the strip, and a fantastic pool.

Excalibur is the ugliest hotel, and not in a great location, IMO. I liked Flamingo's central location and a very nice pool.

We, family of four, visited LV recently. Stayed in Falmingo and MGM. I would not stay in Flamingo. However the location is good, the hotel is run down. MGM was much nicer (I got $69 Sunday night deal directly from their Web site). Ask for a room overlooking New York. Great view. Downstairs from MGM there is a great gaming facility, Gameworks (find coupons in the magazine) that my kids loved. You can leave the kids over there at night and they can walk back to their rooms. If you have other questions E-mail directly

Many thanks to all who took the time to respond to my question. We considered all of your suggestions and ended up with reservations at the Mirage Resort. They have a promotional rate during the time of our stay and a AAA discount so everything fell into place easily enough - thanks again - Sam

I know you made your reservations already, so here a few things for when you get there.
the MGM is right across the street from NYNY. (thats where I was gonna recommend you stay). It has a great arcade, and roller coaster. Both are fairly inexpensive.
They also share pools, so if MGM's is too crowded, you can go over to NYNY's pool. At least, thats what we were told when we were there. (May of last year) They will give you a plastic bracelet to get in. its a much smaller pool, but your 13 year old will get a kick out of it, because the roller coaster does a loop almost right above it.

The NYNY is a pretty cool hotel to visit. Kinda cheesy, but I liked it.
(Im 25 just for the record.)
Have Fun!
