hotel recom. for ny city
my fiance and i are getting married in central park this june. we need 4 rooms for everyone involved. she and her friends want to stay as close to times square (or a short walk/sub ride). i am having a difficult time finding a room and here's why. last summer she and i went to new york and stayed at the paramount. it was a 4 star hotel (still is on hotel .com). i don't mean to sound upity (sp?) but i wouldn't let my dog stay here. i have closets that are bigger than our room. we are looking for something clean/nice location/good size for a human for right around 300 a night.please help.

i forgot to add somethin. little confused about getting a decent hotel because if the paramount is 4 star (beyond small rooms, filthy outdated, tiny bathrooms, and a lovely view of a brick wall outside our window with a great rubber mattress on the floor as our bed) then i'm nervous about what i'm gonna put my parents and her parents in. and please feel my pain when i say i'm spending a ton of money everywhere else so i'd like to try and keep this right around 250-300 a night. thanks again

You're asking for a lot. If you were trying to reserve a larger block of rooms, you might have more bargaining leverage. But $300 a night for clean, nice and not-tiny in Manhattan is a tough one. You might look at the Affinia family of hotels:

The Hilton New York is a large impersonal convention hotel.
Agree on the www.Affinia.com hotels.
The Paramont is a 2 1/2 or 3 star at best.
The Park Hotel, not near Central Park but in Murray Hill would be a wonderful little boutique hotel for your group. Charming rooms in the pretty hotel in a great location.

3 years ago we had a bunch of visitors in for a family event on memorial day weekend. At the time there was a good 'special offer' for the shelbourne murray hill hotel (affinia.com). Many of our visitors were families, and they stayed in the 1 bedroom apartments there. The location is close to grand central station, so it's a quick shuttle to times sq, and an easy ride to almost anywhere else. At the time, the special offer was the grandparent special, and although few of our guests were grandparents (some were), they could get the deal anyway. Their studio suites were nice too.

The Park hotel? Which is that GoT? Do you mean 70 Park? It's not getting great reviews on TA.
zobraffic, I think you have to forget about the Paramount episode. It's awful and not all 4* hotels are that bad. But as long as we're on the subject, once more let's say the star rating system is about AMENITIES (ie, restaurant, fitness center, concierge) and NOT niceness. So there are nice 4 star hotels (places with lots of bells and whistles) and not so nice ones. There are lots of 3* hotels that may be nicer than some 4* hotels.
Quikbook.com is my favorite site for shopping NYC hotels but I also agree that the Affinia.com group are very good and very good value. They're especially good if her girlfriends are doubling up in rooms since most of the rooms are suites. Only downside is none of their hotels are really right near Times Square.
I don't really agree with the need to be close to TS, but I'm not the one getting married. Best options near TS that could come in around $300 are
>the Casablanca
>the Michelangelo (I see if for $295 on quikbook)
>the Blakely
The Sofitel is a really nice hotel if you guys want to splurge for yourselves.

I picked the weekend 6/8-6/10. Howire has a 4* boutique hotel in the Times Square Zone for $259. It's most likely the Muse, based on info on betterbidding.com.
Of course, with Hotwire, you prepaid right now, and you can't add additional rooms easily for the same price.

Agree that what you're asking for in NYC for $300 per night in June is not very realistic. (You won;t get 4* for that unless you do Priceline - and then you don;t get topick the hotel. And some Priceline 3* are not great.)
Agree to try affinia.com. Or - for lower prices the applecore group of budget hotels gets reasonable reviews. (Check out the latest reviews on tripadvisor - but realize they are basic - you just don;t get luxury - or large rooms - for $300 per night in NYC).
The Lucerne - a pleasant hotel on the upper west side is showing double doubles (rooms for 4 are rare in NYC) for only $330 per night on their website. If your group needs those versus plain doubles that might be a good choice.
The area is mid/upscale residential - busy but not frenetic like Times Square - with lots of great inexpensive restaurants, right near Central Park and with good subway access to the rest of the city (2 lines).

Okay, see if the Times, in Times Square is in your price range. Perhaps you can swing a deal for 4 rooms. They are all fully loaded uber modern rooms with space and luxury bedding.
If you cannot swing that, the Roosevelt will meet your needs. Huge hotel, a good walk tot times, but not too far, and near Rockefeller center, great shopping and across the street from grand Central.

The david_thomson poster is shilling for that website. He's posted multiple times, including a couple of really ridiculous ones where he claims ignorance of the very website he recommended days earlier.
NO ADVERTISING ALLOWED.
zobtraffic, I guess you've already reserved. I recall the rooms at that Hilton being quite small-- but YMMV. The location is good.
