Hotel/Motel: near Tahoe City or Truckee, CA
We are two senior citizens on a ski trip. We are looking for an inexpensive, clean, quiet place to stay the first week of March. We'd appreciate any tips.

How do you plan to travel from your hotel to the ski resorts? You might find a package more interesting if you are willing to stick to a single resort. These would include Northstar, Sugar Bowl, Alpine Meadows and Squaw. Alpine Meadows does run a free shuttle to the north shore and you could take TART to Homewood too. Homewood gives you a discount equal to the TART fare. Alpine Meadows and Homewood have the cheapest lift tickets for seniors. So it might be worthwhile to stay in Tahoe City rather than Truckee.

We're 70 and 78 so my husband skis for free at Squaw. We already have our plane tickets. We'll be visiting our daughter in S.F. then renting a car to drive to Tahoe City. Looking for something under $150 a night, preferable under $125. Thanks for your help.

The best (and most popular) motel in the area is the Best Western Tahoe Truckee.

Enjoy it - it'll be filled with skiers if you're there on a weekend or when there's a lot of snow. When I was last there, everybody ate together in a communal breakfast room, before those were common.
It's an easy drive to either the town of Truckee or the lake for dinner.
