Hotel Lucerne in NYC

A few people asked me to let them know about my stay at the Hotel Lucerne. I stayed there for 3 nights a week ago. I really liked this hotel. It's in a nice area on the upper west side, very close to the Museum of Natural History. The room wasn't very large (I'd say average, though not small) but it was nicely appointed, very clean and quiet. The service was great and extremely courteous. They really went out of their way to help - bellmen always openning doors, getting taxis, etc. The price averaged $190 per night. Definitely worth a stay.

Thanks for the review of the Lucerne. We have reservations at both Lucerne and Omni Berkshire, but leaning twards the Lucerne due to location. We got a rate of $155.00 for memorial day weekend, and $159.00 at the Omni.

I like the Lucerne, too. I had a great room on the 12th floor I think it was - two double beds, facing East.

Thanks, Liz. We will be staying there end of April. We requested a two bed corner room. When we get there should I request one on a higher floor? How many floors is that building anyway? We chose it for proximity to AMNH and Central Park, and got a price of $169 a night through the hotel (AAA rate). If you have time, care to tell us where you ate in the area, what shows did you see, etc?

Louise: I've never been to the Lucerne, but the Omni Berkshire is really a lovely hotel. It is not a convention hotel, so it's smaller and they focus on the sleeping customer. It is a full-service hotel, with a bar, restaurant, etc. It is not in a residential neighborhood like the Lucerne (which is really in a lovely neighborhood on the Upper West Side), but is conveniently located in midtown steps from St. Patrick's Cathedral, close to 5th Ave and Madison Ave shopping, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, a short bus or subway ride to the museums on the Upper East Side, etc.

Don't discount it!

louise: if you are a light sleeper, I have found that the Omni Berkshire has thin walls; I can hear the TV and conversation in the next room. I like the hotel but that is why I stopped staying there.

Many of you got a better rate than I did. Good for you! Maggi, I stayed on the 3rd floor in a corner room (through this forum, I heard the corner rooms were larger) and had a queen size bed. Fine for hubby and me. There are 12 floors, I think. We did not eat in the hotel restaurant (on the ground floor) so I can't comment on that. We did find a great breakfast place called Good Enough to Eat a few blocks from the Lucerne. We didn't actually eat dinner in the area, since my husband planned our dinner excursions ahead of time - places he either heard about or had been to before. But we passed quite a few restaurants in the area that looked nice.

We have stayed at the Lucerne and are staying there again over Memorial Day weekend. Do ask for a corner room because it is larger.
Our rate--from the hotel--was $155 a night. They have great service and the location is unbeatable on the Upper West Side.

I stayed at the Lucerne a few years ago and loved it. I was traveling with a group of people and booked for everyone else. For some reason they got inside rooms, and I'm not sure if they had views at all (they must have had something). But I got an outside room with a great view looking east. I remember my room had two double beds, theirs had single queens.

At that time, I ate at the hotel restaurant and ordered room service. It was really fabulous, highly recommended.

Got back from our trip to NYC last weekend and just wanted to add our impressions to this topic. Peteralan, to answer your question, our room did not have kitchen facilities, just two double beds, an armoire with TV, a closet and a bathroom. I can echo everything LizQ wrote, with the addition that we did eat at Nice Matin which is attached to the hotel several times and even stopped in for cocktails as well. It reminded me a lot of a restaurant in Paris we frequented years ago. The food was great and not too pricey. You do get a 25% off breakfast coupon to use at Nice Matin when you stay at the Lucerne. We loved the hotel and the neighborhood. After checking out the upper east side and the Times Square area we were so glad we made the choice to stay in Upper West. It's an easy subway ride anywhere in Manhattan, so proximity was not a big deal to us. In fact proximity to Central Park two blocks away was more important. We spent a lot of time there. There are tons of reasonable and good restaurants within walking distance of the Lucerne. I will stay there each time I am in the Big Apple from now on.
