Hotel in the Beaufort, SC
I have booked a 2 night stay at a B&B in the Beaufort, SC area called Beaulieu House on Cat Island. This is a stopping off place for our drive from Wash. DC to our home at Jupiter, FL. We have a Westhighland Terrier traveling with us and this B&B is a dog friendly. Has anyone out there ever stayed at this B&B? I am curious to see the Beaufort, SC area. We are staying in Savanna on our way up to DC, staying at a La Quinta Inn there, they are dog friendly.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Boatman!
My husband and I stayed at the Beaulieu house for 4 days in February and had a mixed reaction to the place. We found the place comfortable and clean, but the sheets were never changed, no clean towels, no made beds, etc. The shampoos and soaps were in big, economy sized bottles that were down to the last couple of ounces, and the owner . . . let's put it politely . . . walked to the beat of a different drummer. Breakfast was good, but very slow in coming. Basically the experience was just a little weird. We love Beaufort, but would probably choose somewhere else next time.
Good luck.

Donna, thanks for replying. While you were in Beaufort did you see another hotel or B&B that you thought would be a better ulternative to Beaulieu House. Remember, we are traveling with a small dog. Also, did you find some good restaurants in the Beaufort area?

Boatman--Anybody with a Westie deserves to have a reply--I looked up on the web and found that two hotels were listed, each charging $25 for a pet. They were a Ramada Limited and a Howard johnson Express Inn. I expect that both are out on the highway and not in town as I was just in Beaufort in April and there are NO hotels in town, only B&B's. But still they might do for you and your Westie.
A wonderful place to eat local fish and shrimp and oysters is a short drive from Beaufort to Port Royal. It was called Dockside and the locals were in there eating oysters by the platter and the shrimp that the boats just unloaded.
Good luck--Margo

Margo, thanks for you reply. My Westie is always making new friends for me. She is 14.5 years old and we have only boarded here once, and I will never do it again. I think I will cancel Beaulieu House and opt for one you your hotel recommendations. Can't wait to taste the food a dockside.

We returned from our trip to Beaufort, SC. I didn't like the dog friendly hotels in Beaufort, so we stayed at the Best Western Sea Island Inn. They had a little fury guest that they didn't know about. The room was clean and neat, but a little small. We had a bonus while there as the Gaillie (sp.) Festival was going on at that time. It is a celebration of the African roots of many of the citizens from that area. Had dinner at Plums, it was delicious. Plums is dog friendly on the porch and the view was lovely. Weather was great so the outdoor dining was terrific anyway. Had lunch at Plums the next day. Lunch was good, but portions were small. Went to dinner at the Dockside that evening. It was very busy so we had a long wait, but is a great spot and food was good. Dockside is NOT dog friendly. Beaufort has a lot of Greek rivival homes that were spared during Sherman's march to the sea. Guess it was a bit out of the way on his way to Savannah. Nice people and nice town.

It is the Gullah Festival. It celebrates how the African roots of the slaves created a culture indigenous to the Low Country. Gullah or Geechie is not part of other southern states where slavery thrived but specifically to the barrier islands of South Carolina and Georgia.
