Hotel in Jackson, Mississippi, or vicinity

We want to stop for a night on our way from Atlanta to Memphis.

We are considering Jackson, but we would much prefer to stay in a rural or scenic location.

Any ideas?

Also, is the town of Oxford worth a detour?

Yes on Oxford....very nice square....good places to eat.

Jackson typical city....what area are you thinking about looking for scenic night?

Maybe a bed and breakfast?

Jackson is really not on the way from atlanta to memphis unless you are going really out of your way. After Birmigham you will pass through Tupelo and close to Oxford. Oxford is cute and what I would recommend if you are going to split up the 6 hour drive although it's only 1.5 hrs from Memphis

Now I see the problem. I meant to say we will be driving from New Orleans to Memphis!

We have since revised our itinerary. Our routing will be New Orleans, Lafayette, Natchez, and Vicksburg before we get to Memphis.

Jackson is actually a nice city for a day trip. It has an excellent "new" capitol building, an old capitol which is now a history museum, and a pleasant, modest sized art museum with a good collection of work by state-based artists. One can also tour the Governor's Mansion, but its hours are limited, and I didn't get a chance to do this.

Two very good lunch options in the immediate downtown area near these attractions are Miller's Grill (a meat-and-3 soul food spot) and Tony's Tamales (yup, hot tamales).
