New Orleans to Memphis, Tennessee

We will make this drive in March, 2010. Do you have any suggestions for where we might stay and what we might see and do along the way?

This is a pretty straight shot on I 55 and easily doable in a day. Are you wanting to break it up and stay overnight somewhere? Jackson is about half way. Other than that there really isn't a lot to see/do IMO along the interstate corridor.

If you've got 2-3 days, I'd head over and visit Natchez, take the Natchez Trace. Maybe detour through Vicksburg. Then continue on the Trace to Tupelo then take US 78 to Memphis. Plenty to see and do on this route.

If you have a couple of days and want to avoid I-55 as much as you can consider, as dfr4848 said, Natchez & Vicksburg then north on 61 to Clarksdale, a neat little Blues Museum and a restaurant that is partly owned by Morgan Freeman, Good Southern food.
Then take 278 to Oxford and Ol' Miss where the campus speed limit is 18 mph in honor of Payton Manning's jersey number. Also some William Faulkner sites in Oxford. Great restaurant on the square call City Grocery. As easy hop from Oxford to Memphis.

Thanks for the suggestions. Do you have a suggestion for where to spend the night in Oxford?

If you want to learn more about the Natchez Trace, here is a thread that I started before we drove it. We liked the history of Vicksburg BTW and we loved the Monmouth Plantation where we stayed.

Hi, I would love to hear which route you took from New Orleans to Memphis, as my wife and I are planning this trip in June.

Hi tilbury,

After we left New Orleans, we drove to Lafayette via Plantation Country, and from Lafayette we drove to Natchez, Vicksburg, and Jackson, MS, where we spent the night. We drove to Memphis via Oxford.

The best thing about Lafayette was Prejeans, which serves up great Cajun food and music.

Natchez is a beautiful town and Vicksburg is interesting to those who like Civil War Battlefields (we don't much).

Downtown Jackson is dead at night, but Oxford has a very nice Courthouse Square and we enjoyed a delicious, homey entree-and-two-sides meals at Ajax Diner, on the square.

In Memphis we enjoyed the National Civil Rights Museum, Graceland!, and, especially, Beale Street. If you want a change from Southern cooking, you can get a very good Thai meal at Bangkok Alley, 121 Union Avenue.
