Hotel Del: How to choose a room?

Jarrod,
I think you will prefer staying in the historic part of the Hotel Del (I grew up in San Diego and this is what we always called it!) over the new towers. Although the tower rooms are more modern, the new rooms are much more conventional and lack the charm of the older part of the hotel. Also, the towers are set aside from the historic part of the Hotel and you may feel a bit isolated from the buzz of the hotel. Having said that, as far as I know, the older rooms are quite varied in size and shape. I doubt that the Jr. Suite is large, but maybe there is a particular Jr. Suite that would be larger than the others. The premier rooms or resort rooms are very nice, especially if they have a balcony overlooking the ocean. Having even a small balcony can really expand a room.
The Hotel Del is a lovely hotel. The pool area as well as the beach area are especially nice and you will probably be spending most of your time outdoors anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about the room. Your kids will have a great time exploring the old hotel and running around the grounds.

I stayed at the Hotel Del in March for a conference and was in the "Cabana" section, which is connected to the new tower and next to the pool. The room was pretty conventional and had an odd little patio that had a sorta/kinda pool view.
HOWEVER, it is a beautiful hotel and beach and I spent almost no time in my room. It is truly one of the lovelies places I've ever stayed, even if the room was your basic Sheraton-type accommodations. Slept with the patio doors open and a beautiful ocean breeze. Quaint town. Nice, basic health club. Amazing pool area.

Dear Terry and Madge,
Please excuse comatose/xxxA's behavior today. He was feeling extra cranky last nite and refuse to take his meds. So now he's locked up in the nut house with a straight jacket mumbling something about 'everyone knows what Del means' over and over as he bangs his head against the padded wall.
My apologies for his bizarre outbursts. He is merely trying to repress bad memories of when he was bullied by the other kids at the del and then forced by a cruel and sadistic teacher to write 100 times on the blackboard: the del is the del coronado.
Signed,
comatose/xxxA'x Mom
