Village Tavern on Hanes Mall Blvd. is excellent. All kinds of salads, sandwiches, etc. Highly recommend it.

Mi Pueblo on Reynolda Rd. has good Mexican food for a reasonable price.

Salem Tavern in Old Salem is good for a different type setting and meal. Try the Moravian Chicken Pie.

Peters Creek Parkway is okay, but I'd recommend on or around Stratford Road.

Have a good trip!

Hi, I work and live in Winston Salem and I would say that the Holiday Inn Express on Peters Creek Pkwy is not the safest area to be in. I would recommend the LaQuinta on Stratford Road safer area, near the mall, also near Village Tavern (right behind the hotel). If you need any more info on how to get there or anything else about WInston feel free to email me.

Shoot! That's disappointing to hear about the Peters Creek Pkwy— I guess I was hoping since the hotel's new, the area might be decent (screwy logic, I know...). Thanks, both of you!

jj, would you say that the Vallage Tavern and Mi Pueblo's other locations are comparable?

Apriel, besides the good location, is the La Quinta a pretty nice place? Clean, etc?

Thanks again!

Christie,

The Village Tavern's other Winston-Salem location is in Reynolda Village, which is a nice little area to visit. It is good also, but I prefer the Hanes Mall Blvd. location.

Right now, the only Mi Pueblo in Winston-Salem is on Reynolda Rd. The old location on Oakwood, off Stratford, has been torn down, and they are in the process of building another Mi Pueblo on Stratford Rd.; not sure when it will be ready, but it won't be for a while. There is a Mi Pueblo about 10 miles outside of Winston-Salem, in Clemmons.

I used to live in Winston-Salem--still love it.

We were there this Spring, and it appeared that one of our favorite restaurants, Rainbow News & Cafe, had closed.

I agree with the comments posted above.

As to the Twin City Diner, it's a great little spot for lunch; however, just up the street is a place that is a little better: West End Cafe (great for lunch or dinner).

If you are not locked into a chain hotel, you should consider staying at the Brookstown Inn. It's a B&B in a great area of W/S, very close to Old Salem and very close to downtown. Across the street from the hotel is a great restaurant, South by Southwest (open for dinner only, with food just as the name implies).

Have a great time!

jj, I got the Oakwood address from the AAA guidebook— guess they're a little out of date. Glad I asked! Is the Clemmons Mi Pueblo convenient to Tanglewood Park? This trip is planned for early December, and we're planning to see the light display while we're in the area.

chuck, that's too bad about Rainbow News and Cafe— I was looking forward to it from the AAA guidebook description. They've misled me again— maybe I should find a new guidebook! Thanks for the heads up on that. What does the West End Cafe specialize in? I had originally looked into the Brookstown Inn, but we're trying to squeeze in an extra trip on the cheap, so a chain it is. Maybe next time though, the pictures on their website looked great.

Thanks for all the help!

The Mi Pueblo in Clemmons is not far at all from Tanglewood. (You'll enjoy the Christmas lights display there!) Also, there's a nice little restaurant on Stratford Rd. (on the way to Clemmons) called "Cities" you may want to try.

If you're in town during the first 2 weekends of Dec., you may want to consider attending the Candle Tea at Old Salem. It's the first two Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays of December. It's a very nice and cozy tradition. If you're interested, details are probably on the Old Salem website (www.oldsalem.com) the cost is (or was) $3.00/person.

West End Cafe specializes in sandwiches mostly during the day, but they are great sandwiches. My favorite is the veggie reuben. At dinner, the restaurant stretches out a bit and usually has good seafood specials. It's very casual (but relatively new, so it still looks nice). Good bar, which I judge by the fact that they have Guinness draft.

jj— I'm really looking forward to seeing the lights display. I've read about it on here and it sounds wonderful. Is Cities a pretty casual/sandwich type place? We'll be traveling with our kids, ages 5 and 3, so we're not up for anything fancy. As for the candle tea, I did see some information about it on the Old Salem website, and we're thinking about it, as we'll be there on the first Thursday, but I'm not sure it's something the kids would sit still for.

chuck— The West End Cafe sounds yummy; I'm adding it to my list! I think we might have to extend our trip to fit in all the great restaurants y'all have been recommending!

Thanks again, guys!

Cities is a casual, sandwich/salad type restaurant. Your kids may be enchanted if you're seated in one section of the restaurant -- when you look up, the ceiling is dark with lots of twinkling type lights, like stars.

FYI - Village Tavern has a nice children's menu. My 9-yr. old likes their chicken fingers or prime rib.

As for the Old Salem Candle Tea, the tour is divided into parts: singing Moravian Christmas hymns; watching the ladies make the Moravian beeswax candles; having Moravian sugarcake and coffee in the kitchen; seeing and having explained the minature version of Old Salem (in the dark); and watching and hearing the Christmas story told.

As for the Tanglewood Festival of Lights: it will be very crowded in December. My advice would be to be there as it opens or right after.

If you're into some of the restaurant chains, on Hanes Mall Blvd. there is an Outback, Lone Star, Longhorn, Macaroni Grill, Applebees, Jason's Deli.

Thanks for all the great info, jj! Cities sounds like something we would enjoy. As for the Village Tavern— gotta have those chicken fingers! That's usually the only thing we can depend on our kids eating when we go out somewhere. We'll probably skip the chain restaurants, as we have those at home.

I'm really tempted by the candle tea, but I know my younger child won't sit through it. Maybe I'll leave him and my husband to their devices, and take my daughter to see it...

I figured it might be best to get to the light display early— thanks for the reminder. And thanks again for all your help!
