Does anyone know of any good horseriding stables near to New York city? (Within train/bus journey distance) My sister and I are bringing a horse mad teenager to NYC in October and we would all like to go for a ride while we are over, if possible. If that's not possible does anyone know of any horsey events we could go to watch?

There are dozens of stables and riding academies in Westchester County, just north of NYC along the Hudson River. However, I can't be of any help in giving recommendations. Perhaps you can contact some local stable or academy and find out if there is any sort of clearinghouse or information who can help with a recommendation this area.

There is horse back riding in Pelham Bay/Orchard Beach which is in the very north Bronx. I'll try and find some info.

You don't even have to leave the city to go riding. There are stables (i think they are called Claremont) near Central Park, as well as at Chelsea Piers. If you want scenery, though, i suggest you try the stables nearest the park.

I've heard about riding horses in Central Park, and I'd like to do it when I go there.
What requirements do they have?
Do you have to pass a test or something?
Is it a group thing or can you go out on your own?
What level of riding ability do you have to have? I've riden for about 15 years (up to competing at state level).
Age requirement? (I'm 20)
I think I read somewhere that it costs about $50/hr. Is that about right?

Claremont Stables is in the west 80's. they focus mostly on lessons (indoors) and boarding horses for locals who like to ride in the Park. I believe they do still allow you to rent horses by the hour to ride in the Park - but you must be able to deomonstrate that you are strong enough rider to manage the horse. there are no groups rides - this is all indiviudal - and you are reponsible for everything. Be aware that in the Park you must stay on the bridal paths (around 3 miles long I think) - can't simply wander around the Park. and it is a two-block walk through city traffic to get to and from the Park. Most locals are used to the horses and give them a wide berth - but there are sometimes jerks who don;t realize that they can;t run up right next to/behind one with their cars. If you are interested you should contact them ASAP - I believe there are waiting lists for appointments at prime times.

Also - the stables at chelsea piers have closed. there are also very good stables in Van Cortlandt park in the Bronx and in Forest Park in Queens.
