Homestead Resort, Michigan

My family is thinking of staying at the Homestead Resort in July for 5 days before we go on to a wedding at Mackinaw Island. I have two teenagers who will likely want to roam the property, swim and golf, while my husband and I like to read. My questions are:
1. The prices seem significantly less to rent from owners/management companies than directly through the Resort. Other than not being able to use the pools, what other disadvantage is ther if any? Can you still use the shuttles, eat at the restaurants, etc.?
2. There are so many accomodations, is there one better than another? Are some too far away from evertythin, are there others that are all families with little children?
3. Can we walk from one location to another, such as the Stoneybrooke Lodge looks so far away from the beach that we may have to drive?

We really want a great view of the water.
It also seems that it is cheaper to rent by the week, which is required by many during that time and just leave early than to rent by the day?
Any and all help would be great.

Hi,
the Homestead is one of my favorite resorts in the USA...check out
www.leelanau.com/travel..click on
Homestead condos and you get a great
idea of what is available. I have rented
through Harris properties in Glen Arbor in the past, the price is much better than renting through Homestead reservations. It's beautiful up there...
I can't wait to go back.
Good luck!

Have you considered staying on Mackinac Island before the wedding instead? I would think the Mission Point Resort would be comparable, and there's plenty to do on the island. Just a thought...

It has been years since we stayed at the Homestead but it is in wonderful location. The main problem for walking around the resort is that it is built on a hill. I remember hauling luggage up flights of stairs to our condo. In addition to the resort, you are near Glen Lake and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

You don't have access to the pools if you rent directly from an owner? That seems odd, are you sure about that?
