Homer by plane
My husband wants to see eagles and sea otters from a cabin or bed and breakfast. Homer seems to be the place. Time is the crunch, we are coming back from Denali in mid August on Sunday and our plane leaves at 1:00 on Tuesday. So could we fly there from Anchorage on Sunday, enjoy Homer on Monday and fly back to Anchorage on early Tuesday? Or is this too forced.

I don't know about sea otters in Homer?? But they are common in Seward. Eagles also luck. Why not consider driving to Seward- a long day but more to do than in Homer. http://www.homeralaska.org/

Either way get copies of the visitor guides.

No of course you can fly to Homer, rent a car, drive around, stay overnight, all that, then fly back to Anc. in plenty of time for your ongoing flight. ERA Avation, www.flyera.com, has several flights a day, around 50 min. each way, around $200 round trip. I believe you can get Alaska AL miles on ERA flights, although unfortunately you can't book through the AS website. In all likelihood, though, you could check your bags through to your final destination if you wanted to fly straight from Homer to Anchorage then connect on your homeward trip.
The flight to/from Homer is fairly scenic, although every time I've done it it's been rather bumpy. I much prefer it to driving, though.

We were there last March and found Homer charming, but there's not much to do. Lots of eagles because they're fed by the "Eagle Lady" on the end of the Homer spit. Plenty of cute craft galleries and a couple good restaurants, too. You should have plenty of time to see the sights. I recommend driving up high for a look out on Homer Bay; really spectacular. Plane ride over is an adventure, too! Have fun.

One of the great things about this forum is the diversity of opinion. I have just the opposite feelings about Seward vs. Homer than a previous poster. For me, Seward is a great palce to visit but a day and a half or two is enough for me. On the other hand, I have spent four and five days in Homer on a couple of occasions and wished I had more time each time. The one draw back in Homer is you need a car to explore and that's not altogether true in Seward.
Some of the things to enjoy in and around Homer: The previously mentioned galleries; the furthest west auto road reachable by road from the rest of the country at Anchor Point; salmon fishing in the salmon cove on the Homer spit; glaciers and bay views from the hills above Homer; touring the little Russian villages with their onion-domed churches in the hills and valleys around Homer; ferries or water taxis to the little villages on the lower Kenai; and much, much more.

It will be easy to do the 45 minute flight to Homer, and you will enjoy numerous lakes along the way, plus an overview of the lower peninsula.(I'm in Kenai, home of the King Salmon). A couple things about Seward- they have more mosquitos, the roads can be congested with tour buses heading to the ships to pick up ot let off Anchorage plane/train folks, and the little town gets very choked with pedestrian traffic searching for souvenirs before their ship departs. If you had more time, Seward would be a fun day visit, but honestly, Homer will offer a mulitude of activities, and you would even have time to take a tour of Halibut Cove on Monday, or Seldovia. The sea otters and eagles are there. People compare Homer to Norway because of the fjords and glaciers and pristine setting. The wildflowers are in abundance, and strolling the beach on the "spit"(long strip of land jutting out into the bay where numerous shops and restaurants and marina are) will give you all the fresh air and excercise you need. Enjoy your trip
