we're driving to asheville, nc from FL next week for a short visit, and we're looking for a possible way to break up the return drive. ideas include a night or 2 in either hilton head or savannah (we've never been to either). our kids are ages 2 and 5, although the 2 year old will be having his 3rd birthday during this stopover.

it's a pretty last minute decision, so any fast input is welcome...

Hilton Head probably has the best beach, if that's what you want. The water might still be a little chilly for the little ones.

I would opt for Hilton Head. We were there after Thanksgiving with 2 yr old grandson. Even tho' the ocean was very cold, he still liked jumping the "waves" (ripples). Digging in the sand and chasing "PopPop" were great ways to wear him out. We got a great rate at the Hilton--room included a refrigerator and microwave. Very kid friendly--playground, too.

Even though we were on the beach all day Saturday and Sunday, next week may still be a little early to be on the beach.

The ocean is still pretty chilly (it is warm in November from the summer) and if the wind is blowing off the water, you'll freeze your butt off.

My suggestion would be Savannah.

We were at HHI from 3/6-3/13 and the beaches were filled with children playing in the sand -plenty of dolphins and sun and the water is too cold for much swimming=more adult relaxation.Consider a day trip to Savannah which is an easy 45 minute drive. You would have plenty of daylight for a full day and the azaleas should still be beautiful.The only problem may be the peak golf season with the nearby Masters.

The beach at Savannah is at Tybee Island, another 20-25 minute drive from Savannah. In fact, you have to go through Savannah to get there.

If you are not interested in the beach for the kids, then a resort at Hilton Head would be your best bet. Savannah is really for people that like to stroll around and enjoy the history of the place or to bar-hop and have a good time. That's sort of dull for the kiddies.

Savannah is better for walking around. My kids love the river front and the Pirate's House would make for a great place for a birthday lunch or dinner.

Another stop between Asheville and Florida is Jekyll Island. If the weather is good. It is fantastic. It is close to I-95 so you won't be too far off the path. There are miles of bike trails and the beach is in a natural state. Take a dolphin cruise.
