Hilton Head Island or Dafuskie Island

I am over from England the last week in May. The Dafuskie Island resort looks tempting but I am torn between staying there and potentially being lazy for a week or staying on Hilton Head and getting out and about with greater ease to see more of the surrounding area.Anyone have any views to help?

If this is your first trip to the area I'd go with Hilton Head as there is much more to see and do but you'll still be able to relax on an uncrowded beach whenever you want. Besides you can easily take a day trip to Dafuskie from Harbor Town, it's a very small island and you can see everything there is to see in one trip.

Hilton Head is such an overdeveloped area with great restrictions on its beaches. I would go anywhere else on the SC coast. Ihaven't been to Dafuskie but you can "get out and about" from many places. I would think you would enjoy seeing Charleston. There are lovely beach areas near Charleston such as Wild Dunes.

Hilton Head tends to get a bit of a bashing on this forum, but my wife and I love it. Great beaches, wonderful restaurants (including a surprising number of high-end places), local hangouts and well controlled development.

I haven't been to Daufuskie in about 7 years, but growth at that time was stalled--not at all sure what has happened in the interim. Although I love the wild beauty of the island you are stuck there with little else to see and do.

I would rather do Hilton Head instead, and as someone mentioned, take the day trip to Daufuskie. It certainly is interesting to see. Read Pat Conroy's novel the Water is Wide before going...will make it all the more interesting. He taught in their one room school house for a while and this book chronicles his experience which didn't last long before he lost that job (not his fault according to his version of the events).

I agree that HH gets an unfair share of bashing here. We would make the drive over from Savannah because the beach there was so much more pleasant than Tybee Island. Even if you aren't in one of the hotels in a plantation with a decent beach, the public beaches have terrific facilities. Our all time favorite was the public beach at Folly Field Rd...really lovely!

Just got back from the Crowne Plaza resort at Hilton Head Island. Had a fantastic, very hot ( english remember),vacation. Thank you for your responses I did actually follow the advice given and I'm glad I did (got one over on my sceptical partner-always worth it!)

David, glad your trip was terrific. It has been unseasonably hot in the South for the last month or so...... don't want you to think it would always be that hot when you come! Geesh..... we haven't seen June yet, but we have baked a bit in Raleigh already! Come back soon!
