Need advice..Savannah then Outer Banks or Hilton Head..Beauford?
You have all been so great in the past..so here goes. My husband and I are planning 4 nights away in late July to celebrate our anniversary. We were thinking of flying into Savannah, spend the night and then drive for 3 or 4 nights somewhere to enjoy the beach. Any suggestions? We like some night life..a good beach bar , local hangouts and also some fine dining. Ideally we would like to have lodging on the beach and be able to walk to everythin..Since it's our anniversary we would like the lodging to be nice. Any suggestions on islands etc?

Hilton Head has the best combination of beaches, fine restaurants, local places, a couple of good beach bars and night life - many of which will be close by but not all within walking distance - that's asking a bit much.
I doubt any of the destinations you are looking at will have "all" your requirements within walking distance of "on the beach lodging".

First forget about the Banks. If you had more time I would recommend a nice drive up the coast. I live in Charleston and the drive to Kitty hawk from here is 500 miles. So fly into Savannah and spend time in Beaufort. It's a lovely town, very walkable and Hunting Island (my favorite beach in the entire world) is a short drive away. There is lodging at Hunting Island, but it's a state park, the cost is very reasonable so it stays booked far in advance.
Rentals at the beaches are generally 7 day minimum during summer. The hotels at Hilton Head might have openings, but be aware that lots of people that usually vacation at the Gulf are now reserving in NC and SC. Availability could be limited so you may want to book quickly. Good luck and have a great time.

Beaufort is between Savannah and Charleston. It's about 100 miles from Savannah to Charleston, with Beaufort in between. You could get a nice anniversary spot here at Harbourview Inn. It's not on the beach, but you can walk to anything in Charleston from there. Plus the food is fabulous! Bring it on.
And I have to give +1 to padams- the Cloister is lovely.

if you decide to overnight in Beaufort I recommend
http://www.oldpointinn.com/ or

My favorite special occasion restaurant is Wren's. If you are there at lunch try Plum's or Blackstone's. And if you love shoes, go to Divine Shoes ( I love it, but not in a league with Bob Ellis in Chas if you are there). Wonderful classic jewelry at Bay St. jewelers....and several other nice shops to browse. I love Beaufort and go often as I have a friend with a house there, but give me Charleston any time!

Come to Hilton Head - we have all the things you are looking for - nice hotels on the beach - Westin, Hilton, Marriott, or you could find a house in Sea Pines where you can walk to the beach. Great food at local spots - Red Fish, Boat House II, The Studio, Sante Fe....many others. And our beach is wide and great for walking or biking.

Hilton Head. Boring. Same same same. Fly to Charleston and spend the night there, and on the beaches near there. even Beaufort. Go up the coast to Pawley's Island and enjoy the "old" beach time. Eat GREAT seafood at small local places. Look at Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort for lodging by the night.
