Hilton Head advice?

My wife and I and our 9 month old boy are going to spend a week in Harbor Island near Hilton Head, S.Carolina with her parents who have taken a house there for 2 weeks. Looking for any suggestions for activities, day trips, dining, local gems of interest, etc.
As a guide we like hikes/walks, beaches, fishing (me), local history, seafood, looking for peace and quiet. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

My favorite restaurant is Charley's Crab. We sat outside on the deck and had a wonderful meal and great service.

I'm not sure my ideas exactly correspond w/ your list of likes, but here are a few things I would do were I do be in Hilton Head for a week.

Take a Catamaran sailing lesson (or just rent one if you know how to sail) from Captain Zodian at South Beach. Take a guided fun-kayak tour of the bays/marshes. Look for sand dollars with my toes in the ocean. Walk on the beach early in the mornign and watch the dolphins cruise the shoreline. Drive in to Charleston for the day and sightsee . YOu can get plenty of history in Chas. Eat there. REnt bikes and play on the the million bike paths in HH. If you are a serious cyclist, road or mtn, forget-it...just play on the bike paths.

Have fun...Hilton Head is very de-stressing. I actually find myself driving the speed limit after a couple of days on HH.

Just want to make sure you realize that you'll be about a 50 mile drive from Hilton Head Island. Beaufort is much closer and I understand that it has some pretty good restaurants and things to do.

Another fun thing to do is to drive to Savannah - don't remember how long it took us to get there but it's a great place to visit. I found Hilton Head to be a bit snobby - charging $5 to get to Harbor Town is awful but since I love light houses, I had to go. We took advantage of the $5 fee to go back to that area for dinner in the evening. In all fairness, the area is beautifully maintained - no glitzy signs and most shopping areas are hidden from the main road by shrubs and trees. We had some great food but sorry, I can't remember the names of the restaurants. One was located along a bay or inlet area.
