Help with Lodging/Airports for NYC/NJ
I am starting to plan a trip to NYC for the last week in March--spring break. Here are some questions I have:
Lodging:
It looks like there could be 4-6 teens/adults in our group. (Family of 4 plus 2 teenage friends) While I could book 3 hotel rooms, I know my family and we need more space to sit/lounge and separate sleeping space. We are not a go from 9am to midnight type of family. Our priority will be museums and other places open during the day with an option of theater some evenings. If it's just the 4 of us, I have booked the Marriott Residence Inn at the World Trade Center. Not exactly in the middle of some things, but has more space and subway access. (I looked up on google maps and it said it would take 30 minutes to get to the Met via mass transit, for example) Any other ideas for hotels with a sitting area, fridge, microwave??
Another option would be a short term rental. As I understand it, rentals of less than 30 days are illegal in NYC. (I assume this is true for all neighborhoods--Brooklyn, etc) I support/respect laws around short term rentals and am not interested in booking one of the many places listed on airbnb, vrbo etc. What about New Jersey? Hoboken? Jersey City? Are short term rentals legal there? I saw a listing for an apart hotel in Hoboken--google maps stated it would take an hour to get to the Met from that location. What location would give us the quickest mass transit commuting time? (assuming we are not going at rush hour) We would not have a car.
I would much rather be in NYC especially if we want to rest up in the late afternoon and then see a show later that night. But maybe it's worth it for everyone's sanity to have the space. When I lived in Philly, I would visit NYC for the day. Of all the various visits I have made to NYC, I have never actually stayed there--always a drive/train from a close state. I am interested in your thoughts on this.
Flights:
I have one college student flying from San Jose, CA to NYC. Given that it's a long flight and he's by himself, it would be best if I could fly him into an airport that has easy/fast transport to our hotel. If we are in NYC, which airport would that be? (I assume not Newark) If we did get an apart hotel in Hoboken, which airport would that be?
Thanks for any and all ideas.

I find EWR the best for getting into Manhattan via public transit - just take the train to Penn Station (N J Transit has cheaper fares than Amtrak) or a bus.

Quite a few years ago I stayed at the Millennium Hilton on UN Plaza. This was in January with the lowest rates of the year. (Can't say what it might cost on your dates.). The room was large with a terrific view. I just checked their website and they do offer a number of suites and adjoining rooms which might suit your party. It's a quick walk to Grand Central and the Lex subway line up to the Met. https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/nyc...B&gclsrc=aw.ds

As for airports, it depends.....
If you're staying in Hoboken, then the ONLY airport that makes any sense is Newark - it's just 10 miles away. Even if that's a remote possibility still at this point and you need to book your flights, then book into Newark. Getting to Hoboken from LGA or JFK would be a major pain. Yes, you could get to Hoboken by train/subway/PATH train from JFK but it'd be a slog. Getting into Manhattan from Newark is no more difficult from Newark than it is from JFK or LGA. There are buses and trains if you want public transportation, or Uber/Lyft if you don't.
The options for long distance (>1500 miles) non-stops is about equal into Newark or JFK. From JFK you can also get into Manhattan by public transportaion several different ways, depending on where you are ending up. AirTrain to subway, or AirTrain to Long Island RR. Or fixed price taxi (I don't know the current rate)
If you must connect somewhere, then LGA is also a good option. From LGA, you CAN take a bus but I would recommend taxi or uber/lyft.

Thank you all so much. Newark seems to be the best option in terms of cost and times for this trip. I have now booked 2 rooms at the Resident Inn near Times Square--in case we have 6 adults. I know it's not going to be cheap in NYC. And I may even keep 2 rooms if it is only 4 of us!
