The areas of both hotels are safe, even at night. The NW part of town is bustling on nice summer evenings, with all the restaurants along there. So you won't feel leery at all. Serrato is another good restaurant up there. The entire downtown area is very compact, so even walking from the Monaco to the NW area is very easy. Or take the streetcar.

Inn @ Northrup Station is in the Nob Hill area of Portland, a very nice neighborhood with lots of shops, boutiques, etc. Paley's & Wildwood are just steps away from the Inn, two of our favorite places to eat in Portland.

Don't miss the yummy desserts at Papa Haydn's and the choclates at Moonstruck in this area. I had fun doing some early Christmas shopping at the Pottery Barn in this area when we were in the area in October.

You will love trying out your new camera at the Gorge, take lots of pixs at Multnomah Falls. Have fun! ***kim***

Hotel Monaco is in the downtown core, whereas Inn at Northrup Station is in the NW part of downtown. Northrup Station is a little away from the action, but it is right on the streetcar line. And it does have some good restaurants nearby, notably Caffe Mingo, Serratto, Wildwood, Paley's Place, and a bunch more on NW 23rd.

Since I really love NW Portland I'd personally prefer the Inn at Northrup Station, especially as it's on the streetcar line directly. Of course the Monaco is a fantastic hotel and in the thick of things downtown, but you would have to walk a few blocks instead of using the streetcar to get to the Pearl or NW, whereas the streetcar from Northrup Station in NW takes you door-to-door from the hotel to Powell's, the Pearl, the Art Museum, etc. And there are numerous excellent restaurant choices on NW 21st and 23rd Ave.

Hello -- I posted last month about my upcoming visit to Portland and asked for input on hotels, dining, sightseeing, etc.

We considered staying at the Monaco, but last night I discovered 2 other hotels that I'm interested in: Hotel Deluxe and Hotel Lucia.

Can anyone tell me if those are in the "happening" area of Portland and if they are close to public transportation? I know that the Monaco was right in the "action", but not sure about Deluxe & Lucia.

Any input is appreciated!

Lucia is just a couple blocks from Monaco, so yes, close to the heart of downtown. De Luxe is 7-8 blocks from the downtown core, but close to the trendy Pearl District and NW 21st & 23rd streets, one of the city's popular shopping and dining districts. My wife and I enjoyed a stay in the De Luxe a couple years ago, but as a first time visitor, between the two, you'd probably be more comfortable in Lucia.

The Lucia is a little closer to NW10th where the Streetcar line is. As beachbum says, about 2 blocks and around the corner from the Monaco.
The Lucia has one of my all time favorite Thai restaurants..Typhoon on Broadway.

The rooms are much smaller, it is very European in this way ( I think)...the regular rooms at the Monaco are larger, although I have always stayed in the Suites at the Monaco.

The DeLuxe always sounded good and my friend beachbum liked his stay there, but I didn't like the location..it is not as convenient as the Monaco or the other hotels in that neighborhood.

All three are in good locations, really. The Streetcar isn't Portland's only public transit; we have an extensive bus system too (free downtown in "Fareless Square." The #15 bus headed from downtown to NW 23rd Ave (not free) goes west on SW Washington Street, right past the Monaco (due to a quirk in the routing, the #15 back into downtown goes east on SW Salmon Street, several blocks south of Washington). The #15 also goes close to the Lucia and the Hotel DeLuxe. The #15 is certainly more convenient to get to NW Portland than the Portland Streetcar if staying at the Monaco (5 blocks vs 0 blocks walk); for the Lucia and the DeLuxe isn't almost the same, but at least you have options.

See www.trimet.org for more info on Portland's transit system. You can even punch in your addresses there and get directions to take the bus or trains anywhere point to point. Portland's buses and trains are also GPS-tracked and riders can get real-time arrival of any bus or train via the internet or by calling a phone service and punching in a stop ID - very handy service.
