Help planning a relaxed Utah trip
Hi - We would like to take a trip to Utah in mid April. Thinking Lake Powell (is that the same as Glen Canyon?) and one or two other places that won't have us driving the whole week. We will come back to do the parks that are further away. Any suggestions as to what to combine with Lake Powell? We've done the South Rim of GC. Wondered if Moab is in decent driving distance. I am basically confused about where I will be when touring Lake Powell - in Page or further north near Hite? We love to hike, kayak, scenic drive and touristy stuff. This area seems so fantastic but also very overwhelming when trying to plan just by looking at the map!! Thanks, sue

Glen Canyon National Recreational Area includes Lake Powell. Page, AZ will probably be the best area to explore Lake Powell. There is Antelope Slots Canyon just 5 miles from town. Horseshoe Bend hike just outside of twon. A float trip on the Colorado River orginates from Page.
Hite's Crossing is not the place to be until the lake levels go back up and I really don't think that will happen by next April even with one good year of snow. IMHO, it's not as scenic at the area around Page, AZ.
Zion National Park and Bryce National Park are two excellent choices of near by areas for scenic hikes. If you still have some time you might try driving scenic Hwy 12 from Bryce to Torrey, Utah. This is one of the most scenic drives in Utah. Captiol Reef National Park is just a few miles from Torrey and it's an undiscovered jewel in the Utah National Park system.
You don't mention how you are getting to the area. If Moab is on the way to or back to home, then you might consider it. If you are flying in and out of Las Vegas then Moab will put you in a vehicle for a long time.

Thanks Utahtea for the reply. If we were to fly into Salt Lake City and drive to Moab - how is the drive from Moab to Lake Powell? It looks long on the map but if it's scenic that might be OK. Just bouncing around with the options. Thanks, sue.

You said you want a relaxing week. Is this 5 days or 7 days?
I can easily spend a 5 day week in Moab, Utah area. There is just so much to see and do and you can kayak on the Colorado River.
If you want to do Moab and Lake Powell at Page, AZ you are looking at about 1000 miles if you do it from Salt Lake City and about 50 more miles if you do it from Las Vegas.
If you want to do Moab and Lake Powell at Halls Crossing/Bull Frog Marina's then from Salt Lake City that will reduce your driving to about 700 miles. Halls Crossing and BullFrog are across from each other and you & your vehicle across on the ferry. At Bullfrog you can rent kayaks. Just be aware that you will limit the things to do and see at Bullfrog vs Wahweap (near Page, AZ)
Try these web sites for more info on Lake Powell.
