Driving from Saratoga, NY to Asheville, NC - halfway stopping point

My sister will be driving in the end of June from Saratoga, NY to Asheville. We all trying to figure out where she should spend one night. Some suggest driving all the way to Asheville. It is about 14 hours trip so some of us think it is too far to drive non-stop. What are your suggestions for spending one night between Saratoga near Albany, NY and Asheville, NC? She is looking for a decent hotel (under $150.00) with safe parking

Forgot to add my sister will have her cat and one friend. Cat cannot drive and her friend is not comfortable driving through congested metropolitan areas.
How some of you manage to drive long distances with a pet?

First, the best route is to take I-88 to Binghamton, and then I-81 all the way down to TN. Take 1-181 to Johnson City, which becomes US19W/US23 to Asheville.

Half way of this trip is around Martinsburg, WV and Winchester, VA, on I-81. Both cities have tonnes of motels.

I moved from RI to TX with my cat last year. She really hate travelling by car, but there's really nothing I can do about it. Give the cat a comfortable traveller carrier, and stop often. Make sure you give it lots of water. [And my cat doesn't have a driver license, so can't let her drive. ]

Forgot to mention two things.

1. I-81 is heavily travelled in summer time. Book your hotel.

2. Make sure the hotel welcomes pets. Not all do. And ask about the surcharge. $5 is reasonable. More than $10, and you should look for another hotel.
