Hmmm...we were in Waikiki New Year's 2003, and were surprised by how tame it was. Once the fireworks at Ala Moana Beach Park finished, everyone seemed to go home.

There was some partying in the clubs along the main drag, but nothing like the zaniness typical in major cities on the mainland.

The Hilton and Sheraton hotels usually have concerts, and the nightclubs are busy, but there isn't a lot else going on in Honolulu. They had a "first night" going but it has had trouble with funding in the past couple of years.

Most local people celebrate at homes. It is common to have large family gatherings with tons of food and lots of fireworks. Between people drinking and the fireworks going off in the streets, driving in residential areas is best done with caution.

Not sure about Maui...maui people???

there is not much nightlife in Maui. Honolulu has a few night clubs you may enjoy. I went there for business a few years ago and we did go clubbing a few nights. there weren't a ton of clubs, but a few. We spent new years in hawaii last year on Kauai. really the only thing we saw going on was a party at the hotel we were staying at. mostly couples and families there....you guys wouldn't like it!

Yeah, what ICUY said! Here on Maui it's the same. Big parties of food, fireworks, and drinking for local families. Plus Maui get even less clubs than Honolulu, so for 24 year old tourists, I'd go Honolulu.
