Hi all…

I’m planning on spending a couple of weeks on Maui in May (solo and first time in Hawaii) and want to experience the island from all around. I’d like to explore various areas of the island – spend a couple or three nights in several locations.

I’m leaning toward staying in various bed and breakfasts and hostels. My budget is around $100 per night - I’m hoping to save on some nights to off-set the expense of other nights. I’ve reviewed many websites for the above referenced possible accommodations and wondering if anyone here has any pros or cons/ experiences of staying at some that I’ve considered alone my journey. I know from past experience that websites can be misleading and the charming quaint facility may be completely not so.

I’ve read that some bed and breakfasts aren’t actually licensed for such and again another concern. I’m really hoping to get some true and honest opinions from some fellow travelers of Maui. All responses are welcome and appreciated. Also, others places I’ve not ran across yet are welcome!

I've stayed at Tropohouse a couple of times in the last 6 years. A nice variety of different accomodations. Clean, basic and well maintained. A great economical option. John Melia is a good host, and I liked the Haiku location. Close to Hookipa beach, Paia, Makawao and in good location to explore Haleakala and the road to Hana.

If you haven't already, check tripadvisor.com and you should be able to see reviews from travelers on many of these places. There is also a Maui specific forum with a few local experts as well as folks who go to Maui frequently enough that they could definitely help you out with what you want to know.

I stayed at the Banana Bungalow for about six nights. Went on four of their tours. I would have done all six but they do fill up. I met a lot of people from Europe. Good time. The hostel is located downtown and not on the beach. You might want to rent a car unless you do all of their tours.
