The Pomegranite is wonderful, but make reservations NOW. It gets filled up fast. Another good choice is the Inn on Carlton. If you would rather be near the water and are willing to splurge, try the Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, about 15 minutes from downtown Portland. It's not a B&B, but it is magnificent. While in Portland, and make reservations well in advance, dine at Fore Street Grille -- Chef/owner Sam Hayward is nationally recognized for his use of Maine ingredients, and for seafood, you can't miss with Street & Co., long the best seafood restaurant in town. Neither is cheap, but both provide excellent service and food.
Now, on to Bar Harbor. For a B&B, the Ullikana, an old Bar Harbor "cottage" is ideally situated in a private location just behind Main Street. It's private yet close to everything. Its furnished with wonderful artwork as well as antiques and funky pieces. Some rooms have water views, many have decks, a few have fireplaces. Breakfasts are served on the patio overlooking the water, and they're multi-course gourmet meals. the owners will gladly help you plan your day, and they know the island well. I'm a seasoned B&B traveller, and the Ullikana is, without questions, my favorite.
