I grew up in the NY area, haved lived in Milwaukee for 30 years, and like it very much. I have to disagree that there's nothing to do in the winter.
We're skiers, so cold weather doesn't bother us, we look forward to winter, and the little ski bumps around here are fine for practicing and getting in shape for our western trips.
There's excellent theater, which we enjoy, and find there's not time to see everything we want to see. If theater's not your thing, there's also ballet, basketball, and symphony.
Although there are some expensive restaurants, we have found lots of inexpensive neighborhood places that we like.
There are aeveral museums worth a visit, and we find ourselves going back when there's a special exhibit.
Maybe we're just more easily amused.

I have to take exception to what JES said. I've lived all over (Europe-3yrs., N.C., Atlanta, Dallas, Northern Ca.)and liked each place I lived, but was born and raised in Milwaukee. I never lacked for anything to do there and it's too bad JES can't find enough to keep her amused and busy. Perhaps she just has a very narrow range of interests and needs to be exposed to a greater variety of activities.
The symphony is great as is theater and professional sports. And the restaurant prices are not more than NY. Pleaseeee........My daughter and son-in-law live in NYC and believe me, I know the prices there.
I notice you travel to Europe, why not
take a foreign language class. When I took German in Germany, my instructor could not get over my perfect pronunciation. He kept telling my classmates to listen to 'die blondie' and pronounce as I did. I'm not of German background but English/Irish, so it was probably because I was raised in Milwaukee and had heard German by benefit of living there. I already had a knowledge of French from school and living in Switzerland.
Also, there are a variety of volunteer activities in which you could become involved. Then again, maybe you have seasonal depression from lack of the sunlight in the winter. Better check into that.
Mceranowski, when you are older you may find Milwaukee looks pretty good. When I left in my 20's, having traveled to Europe and then moving there, I thought Milwaukee was not "exciting" enough, but as I return every few years I realize now what a great town it is.
So riddlekitty enjoy your visit. If there's snow, go sledding or tobagganing at Brown Deer or Currie Park or try ice skating at the outdoor rinks in the parks. And the area around New Glarus (named after Glarus, Switzerland)and Spring Green where the House on the Rock is, is beautiful. Life is what you make it, so find the fun in each place you can. I think you'll like Wisconsin. Have fun!

thanks guys for all the info - good and bad, but still thinking about going. i've looked at the new glarus area and it looks quite quaint. i've been checking on some outdoor activities and snowmobiling looks kind of interesting. was wondering if there's enought snow in early december for that and if so, how much for renting equipment and if licenses are required. any information will be greatly appreciated.

Here's a link to the Wis. Dpt. of Natural Resources web site that will give you some information about snowmobile regulations:
http://dnr.wi.gov/org/es/enforcement/safety/snoage.html
As far as snow in early December, that's a hard call. As I recall, last December there was virtually no snow in early December (I live in Madison) but it varies year to year.
