SPAM.. know it well although it's been MANY years since I've had any, but loved it regularly as a kid in England.. spam fritters too !
We also used to smear Marmite on it all (Aussies' version is Vegemite) but in all these years in USA I've not been able to convince my Iowa-gal wife of its merits (Marmite) - except perhaps to add a tad to gravies.
But I don't recall Spam for breakfast, so I'm thoroughly OT I guess. Oh well.

Hi Kal, et. al: My kid's idea of the best local breakfast is a LOCO MOCO. Definitely not an item on Shintani's Hawaii Diet.
The original Loco Moco originated at Cafe 100 in Hilo, god knows when. It consists of two scoops rice, a hamburger patty, plenty brown gravy, and a fried egg on top. Sam Choy does a delicious and far less cholesterol laden version with fried rice and fresh fish. I can't eat a whole one myself. But for my teen-age boys.... no problem.

Aloha kalena, how 'zit?
Just finalized the hotel booking for the upcoming trip in Dec/Jan.
Thinking about b'fast at Eggbert's out on the porch looking at Da Big Fella and King Kong. And the morning Kapaa trafic jam!
Loco moco....Hmmmmm.
Lazy man's loco:
Bottled gravy, pre-made beef patties, rice from the local Chinese deli, and maybe some Spam cubes for accent?
And a 6er of Fire Rock to make it taste good?

HEY! I resemble that remark!
Kona Brewing Co Fire Rock Pale Ale.
Breakfast o' Champions!http://www.konabrewingco.com/beers.html
I found some over at our local booze warehouse but it's just not the same when you drink it here vs there.
Does steam hot dogs quite "ono" I must say!

Linda "Link"..."steamed hot dogs"? Was that a pun? You English! ;-)
Never tried the Lavaman. Looks interesting.
I'm a Fire Rock and sometimes a Golden Ale drinker.
But, I would wager either one of these will not beat the taste of some good brews I had in London a few years back for your husband. When in Rome, tho.
Believe it or not, we had Guinness on Kauai last trip. Not as good as it was in the UK but Guinness at the Lizard Lounge in Kapaa-who da thunk it!?
It IS a small world!

Kal,
I am Welsh not English(its a bit like saying "back on the mainland " to Hawaiians)
what is the main local brew on Oahu (or Hawaii in general) is it cheaper to drink local?
is there a local spirit or firewater(you know the one that tastes great while your there ,but when you bring a bottle back home it tastes like yak piddle)
I am not suggesting that you are an expert on alcoholic beverages, but you sound like you know which way is up.

Sorry. I was out searching all over NoCal for fermented yak piddle. HEY! Don't knock it till you try it! /
On Kauai, there used to be 3-4 micro-brews, The Whaler, Big Wave and Waimea Brew Co. Big Wave closed, The Whaler has gone VERY downhill (except for the view!) and I think Waimea only makes 1-2 different beers now.
The local beer for so many years in Hawaii was "Primo", speaking of yak piddle! It was taken over by Schlitz then Stroh's and finally shut down around 5-6 yrs ago.
Kona Brewing Co and I think Ali'i brew Co are the local big dogs now.
There may be another one named something like "Mahalo", too.
Plus, there may be some micro brews that are strictly local.
Really can't comment on Oahu goings-on since we've only did maybe 3 days on it our first trip in '89. Stayed at the Waikiki Parc and had a blast but Kauai is our "home". My bet is that there has to be some local micros on Oahu.
Mahalo and 200 to go!!!!!

I have bought the Taro Pancake mix for a few years and really like it, just add water. I sometimes add a banana to the mix. I raised my kids on poi and the grandchildren also love it. It is a staple in our house. All the ohana favorites have been mentioned in the posts,Portuguese sausage eggs & rice, loco moco, fried rice with hot dog, spam eggs & rice, Portuguese sweet bread, as the kids were growing up all had big appetites and I spent many hours in the kitchen!

Ya'll are making me hungry!
While we were in Kauai a couple of weeks ago, we stayed at the Marriott. At Kukui's breakfast buffet there in the hotel they had this thing called a zango (zengo?) -- it was mashed banana, cream cheese, and chocolate wrapped up in a sweet wonton and deep fried. It was amazing! Does anyone know anything about this and where I could get a recipe? (Feel free to e-mail me if you do!)
