I also will say sorry for the bad experience, but you *really* shouldn't leave anything in a car to attract attention or be "steal-able".
Heck here in Seattle someone broke into my car and stole a cake from a bakery (pink box) right outside my house... I was on my way to a party and just stopped atran in to change clothes.

Suze...do you buy cakes from Borracchini's?
I used to think Maui was my favorite island, but I'm now a bit partial to Kauai. It's such a lush, gorgeous island, and the views on the north shore are spectacular. We spent 7 nights on the North Shore in a condo at Pu'u Poa. When we're staying for a week, we prefer condos because it's easy to go through clothes quickly (hiking, swimming, etc) and nice to have a washer/dryer. Our last 3 nights were at the Grand Hyatt on the South Shore, and it was a gorgeous resort. Great service, awesome pools, and some very good onsite restaurants. Kauai, to me, is what I always imagined Hawaii to look like.
I also really like the Big Island. We usually stay in Waikoloa (beautiful scenery) but it's a long drive to anywhere on the island. The snorkeling on the Big Island is by far the best.
