We've stayed at Kiahuna Plantation and at the Marriott Waiohai (as well as camping many many years ago), and friends have stayed at Poipu Kai. We all loved all of them!
We don't do too much sightseeing when we're in Hawaii - other than poking around town (Koloa), the only sightseeing we did on our last trip was to drive up to Waimea Canyon for the views, and to have lunch at Kokee State Park. We were planning to drive up to the North Shore one day but traffic was so bad due to road construction we turned around and went back.

When were you there?? Do you know if the traffic from construction is still bad?? I read somewhere in Fodors or Trip Advisor that it seemed like it had died down, but then they replied the next day and heard reports of it starting back up very soon. What part of the week/day would you recommend going to the North Shore? We would love to go to Hanalei. Who goes on your trips? Kids? Ages?

col4ever, I hope some other people (and there are plenty of them on Fodor's) who have been there more recently than I will chime in. We've been throughout the years. Our kids are in their 20s now, but we went went they were small, and when they were older (but not when they were teens). It's been 2 years since we've been to Kauai.
Sorry I can't answer your sightseeing questions, I just don't know the answer.

You may want to check out the website VRBO (vacation rentals by owners) We went to a family reunion on Oahu in'06 and our 3 different families all found great places to stay for under $100 a night. We stayed in a house that had a pool, was in walking distance to Kaliua beach(much quieter than Waikki & prettier) and no farther than 40 min to all areas we visited. I would think there are some listed on Kauai as well. Good luck
