Hawaii Help for september

My boyfriend and I are planning a first trip to Hawaii. We are looking to stay at a upscale off the beaten path gem.No children and not kitchy. We'd like our 10 days to include hiking and relaxing with waterfalls, rainforest and rainbows.Suggestions for islands, accomadations, and activities are very much appreciated.

I agree on going to Kauai - only island we go to any more. I would suggest the Princeville, expensive, but very quiet comfortable place to stay. Hiking galore on the north shore, sunsets at Ke'e Beach, and just kicking back in Hanalei. The Kipu Falls tour is great, and Silver Falls Ranch has a nice horseback riding tour.

I believe in the motto "if you love Kauai, tell your friends to go to Maui." So...Maui, I guess...? Just kidding, of course. But I do think Kauai will have more of what you are looking for. But if you want nightlife go to Maui.
