Hawaii activities -- whale watching, hiking, kyacking, hiking, best spots/winter season
I've been reading up on activities for Hawaii. Most talk about all the options, without saying which are recommended during winter season. If anyone has personal experience on any of these options, I'd appreciate feedback. I'd like to book before arriving, since it's during holiday season and might be booked. As for hikes, there are places that sound great, but it seems there would definitely be weather related issues at certain times of the year. We are most interested in the big island and Kuaui. Thanks!

I'm not sure when you're going exactly but winter of course is when most tourists visit here and if surfing is your sport, the place to be is Kauai's North Shore. Whale watching on Hawaii and Kauai (leave from Waimea town) is in high season during the winter months and you can book your tour easily online. Even if it's raining, bring your Gortex gear and hike in the rain, the temp is warm. Some of the trails can be slippery, the mud is red, and there can be flash flooding so listen to the weather reports on the local radio stations while driving to your day's destination. You are smart to be cognizant of potential dangers. Some people were just drowned at the Olivine Pools on Maui. If you want an almost guarantee of sunshine, book in the Koala-Poipu area on Kauai. Look in your Fodor's guide for accommodations.

Thanks AnnaHola. We have actually booked a hotel in the Poipu area. Someone had told me that there were 'better islands' to depart from, for whale watching, but I don't remember what the recommendation was, and can't find mention of it in any of my travel books. I wish there was more mention of seasons, when discussing hiking/kyacking options.

On the BI, we went with Capt. Dan McSweeney. He is very knowledgable about whales and we saw quite a few whales, including a mother and baby. The tour leaves out of Honokohau Harbor which is between Kailua-town and the Kona airport. Here's his website http://www.ilovewhales.com/home.html

wow! 20- 30 whales?!? I'm envious! we just got back on Friday and did a whale "searching" tour on maui and didn't see any.
on our last day though, swimming at the maui prince, we overheard some people say "wow, those kayakers were really freaked out when that whale breached!" so there must have been some whales passing nearby where we were swimming!
