Have you been fortunate (unfortunate?!) in meeting a celebrity in your travels?

-Shared elevator with Kenny Rogers 8 years ago in Tampa hotel.
-sat next to Wilford Brimley (Cocoon) at a small chinese restaurant in Stamford, CT in 1985
-sat next to boxer Roberto Durant 2 years ago at Mumbo Jumbo in Atlanta, he cam e over and talked to us cause my dad is a huge fan. He's nice but majorly brain damaged.
-sat near Michael Jordan and entourage at Spice in Atlanta last year while he was in town for the ACC basketball finals (UNC was playing). Despite what you would expect from a Southern city, noone even noticed him. I only noticed cause I overheard the hostess say he was coming in 15 minutes.
-p/u Kool & the Gang from Atlanta airport and took to Music Midtown Festival to perform
-met Morris Day & Time, Keith Sweat, Robert Townsend backstage at Music Midtown. Morris Day made me drive him around the block 4 times before he leaped out and rushed on to the stage 20 minutes late. He also made me carry around a full length mirror so he could check himself out anytime.

I have met quite a number of celebrities over the years, but my most recent were on a trip to NYC this past April.
I saw Iggy Pop (of 70's punk fame) in line behind me at immigration in San Juan. I just HAD to say hello to him considering I was a huge fan a number of years ago. He was extremely gracious, which actually caught me a bit off-guard, and I enjoyed chatting with him for a few minutes.
On the same trip, Ben Curtis (the Dell guy) literally ran into my husband while coming out of his apartment building in lower Manhattan. My husband said, "Hey, you're the Dell guy!" Although Ben was in a hurry, he stopped long enough for a quick picture and seemed to enjoy getting recognized. He was also very nice.

The story about badly behaved Kennedys above reminded me of another Kennedy story. It happened to me some years ago, arriving back at JFK airport from Palm Beach, visiting grandparents with the 3 kids. Flight was delayed hours, finally we arrived after midnight. By the time we got to baggage claim, 2 of the 3 kids were exhausted and crying. I had piles of luggage and sports equipment to collect; bcs the flight was so late, hubby hadn't come to the airport to meet us. I had glimpsed JFK Jr getting on the plane earlier; people buzzed a little the way they do with someone famous. Now as I struggled to haul bags off the luggage carousel, the kids wailing behind me, a voice next to me said, "May I help you?" It was John Kennedy, looking gorgeous. I was completely flustered, babbled like an idiot, "Oh, no thank you, Mr. Kennedy, what an honor to meet you, oh, no, I couldn't possibly..." So off he went. Two minutes later the Only Bellhop in the Whole Place came up to me, pushing his cart, and piled my bags onto it. He escorted us outside and helped me get the kids and all our stuff into a cab which he commandeered. I pulled out my wallet to tip him, and he backed away. "Oh, no, ma'am. Thank you, but Mr. Kennedy already took care of that." Classy guy, huh?

In Ventura, CA my daughter and I ran into Courtney Cox and her husband, David Arquette, in an antique store - she was not friendly at all and upset that she was noticed - no one else was even in the store except for the sales people and us. As soon as I looked at her, she "fled" the store while her husband slowly walked out while stopping to look at things.

It doesn't surprise me that you ran into Courtney Cox & David Arquette on the central coast. They spend a lot of time in the area, including New Year's Eve a few years ago at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. I've run into them a few times in the area.

I could not resist responding.
*Saw David Bowie walking down a street in the Village (9/01) with his infant baby in a carrier on his chest.
Some strange punk throw-backs were following him, chatting. He look a little nervous but was very gracious. We followed him at a decent distance and decided to honor his right to privacy.
I did take his photo from behind!
*Saw Larry Hagman at the pinnacle of the "Who shot JR" era. He was a total arrogant asshole.
*Saw Edie Brickell at the grocery store right about the time the New Bohemians had their one and only hit.
She's from my neighborhood and was with her Mom.
Anyhow, she looked so uncomfortable with the attention that I was not a bit surprised that she chose a life behind the scenes (not that marrying Paul Simon is a bad gig).

Met Hank Williams Jr. about 20 years ago. He and many others had a couple of floors of a motel for themselves. I was in town for business and met one of the band at the bar and went up with him. It was like a Cheech and Chong movie with all the smoke. I met Hank and Merle? who was a manager both were exceptionally nice. There were about 3 women each a "10" for every man. I played cards, drank beer etc. until about 4:30 am and was the first to retire! Cool group of people.

-Had Tino Martinex buy me a drink and we talked for awhile. He introduced me to Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada. That night I also met a ton of other baseball players.
-David Justice stopped me on Newbury Street in Boston and asked me to go have a drink with him.
-Met Ben Affleck and a bunch of buddies out at a bar (pre-rehab) and went back to their hotel and partied with him. He spent most of the evening snorting some "white stuff" . . . then took FOUR women back to his hotel room with him.
-Saw Gary Busey in Florida with his son.

Danced with Robt. Duval one afternoon. So what, you say. I'm a male, I say. He and his companion, Luviana, were teaching us Arg. tango and I was having trouble leading. Her played the girl and showed me how, for ten minutes. Nice guy. Good dancer.

This thread's brought back lots of memories. I've seen plenty of celebrities, since I've lived in major cities and traveled a lot, etc., but the most memorable unexpected personal encounters all took place in DC.
1. Jesse Jackson, cruising in his limo down Pennsylvania Avenue, waving at me out of the roof. Unfortunately for him, I was the only one there was for him to wave to in that long block (and I couldn't vote). Late 1980s.
2. Bob Dole, at the Watergate. We talked about my dog. Mid-1990s.
3. Dean Cain, near the Four Seasons. Also dog-related. Mid-1990s.
4. Chris O'Donnell slipped on the ice and fell as he approached me near my home. When I asked if he were all right, he said yes. Sort of dog-related (I was walking her). Mid-1990s.
5. Colin Powell, on a visit to his daughter, who lived near me. He was talking to an officer about his illegally parked car. Worried, I asked if we were also parked illegally, but the officer said no, so we left. Around Christmas, mid-1990s.

Many years ago, I was fortunate to meet and talk with Red Skelton.
What a charming and gentle man....a true gentleman.
Seemed to truly love and appreciate his fans.
He was so much bigger than I expected after only seeing him on TV. Must have been 6'2" at least.
All I can say about him is that he was kindness personified.

I've had the pleasure of meeting many celebs over years of traveling but the most amazing one was Jerry Garcia. I met him on Maui having lunch at Leilani's on Kaanapali beach in the early 90's. He was so gracious and took a photo with me cheek to cheek. I will treasure that photo forever.
