Have you been fortunate (unfortunate?!) in meeting a celebrity in your travels?

Our kids met Michelle Kwan this week at TGI Friday's in Lexington (the Ice Show performers were waiting on a delayed flight.) She came over and sat with them for 25 min, talked about college, etc. She posed for pictures and was so gracious. A great athlete and fine young lady!

Never met anyone on a trip. Only met a few local Philly celebs: Lisa Thomas Laurie, a newsperson, Howard Eskein(spell?), and a Phila. Eagles Football players, don't remember who he was. Maybe I need to hang out at the QVC headquarters (shopping network)down the road from my house to meet some real celebs. (ha-ha).

I have been a trifle successful with celebrity encounters.
I once flew a red eye that was also the plane of choice of Barbara Mandrell.
I seemed to be the only person on the flight who was unaware of her presence and never did get a look at her.
Having read some of the celebrity encounter stories I have come to the conclusion that some people seem to have a capacity for bumping into celebrites whether on a transatlantic flight or while buying some Altoids at a convenience store.
My problem is, other than Kevin Kostner, Harrison Ford, Julia Roberts, and President Bush, you know..really high profile people..I suffer from famous person unawareness.
So the best thing I can do to increase my chances of seeing celebrities is towatch more tv,read fan magazines and discipline myself to read People Magazine instead of Sports Ilustrated at my hair stylists. After all if I don't know who they are how will I ever know they are famous?

I ran in to Toby Maguire on the street near NYU one month ago. I chatted about his upcoming movie for about 3 minutes and people were stopping by and saying how they enjoyed him in it. He's as calm and collect as he seems in the movies and on TV.

Not my story, but a friend of mine's uncle had Claudette Colbert as a godmother. Ms. Colbert invited my friend's entire family to her house on Barbados for a week. (The pictures are pretty amazing.) Even though my friend was a little girl at the time, she remembers Ms. Colbert as an incredibly gracious woman.

Back in the sixty's I flew from LA to Chicago on a super constellation. Back then they had the lounge in the tail of the plane. I met Jimmy Durante in the lounge and chatted with him for about an hour. Nicest man you'd ever want to meet. Upon landing in Chicago I hurried off the plane to my Dad who was meeting me. Called out to Jimmy to come meet him. He graciously came over and hugged my Dad and chatted with him for a few minutes. Happy memories of both Jimmy and my Dad.

Billy Joel two weeks ago on 57 and Madison in Manhattan. He was walking towards me, we kind of both looked up and at each other at the same time. I smiled nothing more nothing less he looked me up and down and then rolled his eyes at me. I was not greeting or even taking to him just a smile. I wanted to yell, "HEYYYYYY I GUESS SHE DIDN'T LOVE YOU JUST THE WAY YOU WERE!
I am sure he gets inundated and I never approach celebs for this reason. I do give eye contact to people as they pass me anyone, that is all that happened here. WHAT A JERK. Maybe just a tired jerk but wear a disguise nest time Billy. YOU ARE FAT, BALDING, AND YOUNGER THAN YOU LOOK. Probably 25 years my senior and he would be lucky to get a conversation out of me if we met in a bar.
But oh he did not hurt my female ego at all

Posted this on the Europe board. Michael Caine stayed in the same hotel as my tour group last month in Ireland. Nobody bothered him for 2 days, he sat with everyone else and we all minded our own business and had a good stay. On the way out an 80 year old tour passenger greeted him and asked him for a photo. Of course he said No. Now I have no respect for him. Elderly people deserve our respect and he's not all that far from catching up to her = ). I have no respect for him now.

Saw John Walsh (America's Most Wanted) at a funeral in a rural Missouri town. One of his cameramen passed away and he attended the funeral. Nice guy. I work with a girl who babysat Brad Pitt when he was in elementary school in Springfied, Mo. She says he was a knock out even then.

FOR SILLY GIRL: (who asked about mary kate and Ashley)
I met them a few years back when they were filming at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The were 12 but looked about 10 at the time. They were polite kids, but seemed somewhat 'programmed'. I felt sorry for them...they couldn't go out on the beach (might get sunburned)had several bodyguards and adults with them at all times, (might get kidnapped),and couldn't go to the pool (makeup was not waterproof), etc. Mom and dad, though divorced hover constantly and bickered about everything. What a life...

Harry Caray at a Cubs game. Very approachable, warm. Especially with young fans. Here's an old one, Shecky Greene at Cleveland's Hopkins airport. I said, "what are you doing here?" Not missing a beat he said, "I was just going to ask you the same thing!" Johnnie Cochran in NYC at table next to us at Trattoria del Arte. And last but definitely not lease, Robert Redford in Vail, Colorado (he's not very tall!)

Had dinner at the same table with the late Doug McClure. This was right before he passed away. The years of booze had taken its toll. He didnt seem drunk at the time, but asked each of us at the table at least three times during the meal if he had signed the picture that was taken with him as we went into the hall.

Saw Valerie Bertinelli and Eddie Van Halen years ago--they were at the race track in Shreveport, LA and were in the same suite that I was in. We just pretended they were regular folk and didn't even really talk. Her parents lived in Shreveport and they actually met at a Van Halen concert here.
Have met Terry Bradshaw, as he is from Shreveport, and my dad did legal work for him for a while.
Ran into Joel Gray in NYC coming out of restaurant.
Interesting how old this post is--but I enjoyed reading the replies.
