Harlem area
My son and I have to be at a meeting at 10 o'clock Saturday morning at 127th street. We were talking about going up Friday night but have no idea where to stay or what to do in that area. Should we stay close by or take the subway from another area? We are driving in from PA so we will have a car. Any ideas on what to do and where to eat in this part of the city? We have done the Time Square, Rockefeller Plaza area already. Need some new ideas!!! Thanks.

Where on 127th is the meeting - west side or east side? At any rate, not many places you can stay in the immediate area. If the meeting in on W. 127th you could consider stay anywhere from midtown to the 90's and take the subway or a taxi to the meeting. If the meeting is on the east side you could stay anywhere from mid town to the 90s and use the subway or a taxi.

You really can't stay nnearby - there aren't any tourist hotels there - and only a few BBs.
Suggest you stay on the upper west side - try the Lucerne for one - which is a very quick subway ride away - and is a great neighborhood for interesting and inexpensive restaurants. You can walk up and down Broadway - visit the major B&N and Tower - both open until at least midnight.

Yes, here's the other question (if you click on your name you can find it).

Not too many GOOD options of places to stay near there. There is a b & b listed under staythenight.com at 93 st & Madison. It's not a hotel but like an apt. Nothing fancy. I agree with escrunchy's advice to stay somewhere near the Lexington Ave. train (4/5/6).
Your other option is staying on the upper westside. The Newton Hotel is a good budget hotel.

The meeting is on the east side at 127th. When it comes to New York, is ther a budget?? I guess I'm not sure what there is to do uptown at 8 o'clock at night versus being midtown. I am looking at The Lucerne and the Surrey or The Milburn. Any recommendations on these? Sorry I posted this question twice but I didn't think it came up in the NY talk area.

Hi hatyhotr, I can't answer your question regarding lodging in NY but just wanted to mention even though you no doubt clicked on NY and posted do be aware that your thread automatically shows up on the United States Board. Once you post if you cannot find your thread do scroll down to the bottom of the left hand side and click on "next 50 post" and continue to do that OR just merely click on your name and your thread plus any other post you have posted will show up on your screen.

Lucerne and Milburn are on the upper west side in the 70's. Both receive favorable reviews on this board and both are convenient to the subway that will take you to the 125th St. station. Subway ride will take less than 15 minutes.

We still don't know where on the east side you're going. Without trying to pry, it will make a difference in terms of subway and your best location. The trains from the west that go up will stop at 125 st. & Lenox Ave., the heart of Harlem. The 4,5,6 train on Lexington Ave. stops further east.
On the upper west side, the Lucerne, Milburn, the Beacon and the Excelsior are all nice 3* hotels. The Lucerne is probably the nicest in terms of decor.
On a Fri. night, the Museum of Natural History's Rose Center, nearby, is open until 8:45, so if you arrived a bit earlier, that would be a possibility for a quick visit. There are loads of restaurants of all sorts in the area. Almost any cuisine you'd want could be found (and at almost any price). There are also several movie theaters from small art theaters to a Sony IMAC theater. Lincoln Center is also not far and most performances start at 8.
On the east side, near the Surrey (a very, nice hotel too), the Metropolitan Museum is open til 9 on a Fri. night. They also are open late on Sat. night if you were planning on staying another day/night. The east side also has many other museums including the Frick, a small treasure, the Whitney and the Guggenheim, to name a few. Some will be open late, but only til 9.
The immediate area around the hotels on the west side will be a bit more active. Both areas are very nice residential neighborhoods. If you walk a few blocks east (toward Lexington ave. where the subway is) there's more commercial activity from restaurants.
If you'd prefer to stay midtown, you can do that and get a subway in the morning. If this is your plan, I'd suggest you stay on the east side though, near Lexington Ave. The Kimberly and the Affinia 50 are 2 nice hotels that would be near the subway stop to get uptown. If you feel you've already seen Times Square etc., I think you'd enjoy the difference of being uptown.
Since you'll have a car, I'll just mention there is 1 hotel in NYC that has free parking, the Travel Inn. It's much more of a budget hotel than the others you're looking at, but it is clean and very well reviewed on tripadvisor. It's near Times Square in midtown. From there you would have to take 2 subways.
If you have something in mind you'd like to do the night before, perhaps we could make suggestions?
I'll also mention there's a hotel called the Wales on 92 st & Madison ave. which is closer than all of these to your meeting, but it tends to be too expensive for what it is and there's less to do in that area. It's not far from the Guggenheim museum.
