Hancock Observatory, Chicago

Hello, fodorites! We will be visiting the Hancock Observatory. I some previous posts that mentioned going to the Signature Lounge instead of the observation deck. What is the dress attire here? We'll be traveling with our kids ages 3 & 5. Thanks!

With kids that age, I'd suggest the observation deck and Cheesecake Factory afterwards (it's in the basement of the building)

I second SiteC_er's recommendation. The Signature Room's not what I'd consider a family-friendly place.

Hi Laurina,
I think it's pretty formal attire. We celebrated there following a graduation and in general I recall patrons being "dresed up" suit and tie kinda thing.

The view from the observation deck is beautiful. Visiting it, followed by CF, sounds like a great idea.

Several years ago we tried to go to the Signature Lounge (not the restaurant) with friends who were visiting us with their then 4 year old. We were told we couldn't take a child that young into the Lounge. Unless their rules have changed, you'll have no choice but to do the observation deck instead.

"Formal attire"? I don't think so. We go every year and I wear shorts and feel very comfortable. In fact we will be there next week and I will go in shorts (since that is all I take to Chicago).

Curious, I thought about mentioning that in my above post as I've never been dressed up to go to the Lounge (the restaurant is a different story). However, it's been a long time since I've been there so was hesitant to say anything. I'm glad to see from your post that it hasn't changed!

Ahhh. My mistake. I misread the OP. I was referring to the restaurant.

We've been to the restaurant in the afternoon twice for bunch and the dress is casual. The views are great and the bunch is good. I think if you had a window seat your children would enjoy it and with a buffet you can shorten the time you spend there. Monday thru Friday they have a buffet for 18.00 adults and 10.00 children. the Sunday bunch is 42.00 adult and 22.00 children. The Monday - Friday bunch is the way I would go. http://www.signatureroom.com/Cuisine/lunch.cfm?PID=4
