Hanauma Bay/Diamond Head

Is there a place at Hanauma Bay to rent snorkel gear? Also, is there a locker rental there? We are coming from the Sheraton Waikiki via TheBus. Is it feasible to stop and hike up Diamond Head in the early morning (when it's cooler), and then get back on TheBus and head onto Hanauma Bay? We don't have that much time and want to do all we can! Thanks!

Yes to both questions , but lockers fill up fast and gear is really expensive and not very good, go to snorkel bobs rent by day or week. Yes to bus it passes by diamond head and you might have to transfer to go to Hanauma bay , not to hard to do, just ask hotel they have the stops and bus routes. sail

Thanks, Sail! I guess we would be better off renting equipment beforehand and then heading straight to the bay in the morning; we can always do Diamond Head later in the day with the rest of the herd. Do you know if we are allowed to carry snorkel equipment on TheBus?

Newcomer - yes, you can take snorkel gear on The Bus. If you're going to be on Oahu for 3 or 4 days, it's worth it to buy a Bus pass - there's one which can be used for 4 consecutive days - costs about $15 - buy at ABC.

Have fun!!

I'd suggest going to Hanauma Bay first and then head up to Diamond Head. While there's been some debate about this on this line recently, I would not worry about what time of day you walk (it's not much of a hike IMHO) up Diamond Head. It took us (wife was 4-5 mo.'s pregnant) approx. 30-35 minutes to get to the top & 20 or so to walk down.

Also you can take a cooler with ice and drinks and food on the bus. Ride the trolly down or at least the cooler person rides, long walk dowm hill so up is a lot harder. Diamond head can be hot if the humidity is high , but very nice if it is low. Bring flash light. As a tid bit Hanauma was voted best snokel beach in all of hawaii. LOL (abc ) they are convenince stores and my wife and i lived in them, there everywhere. Good thoughts. Mahalo sail

I'd go to the Bay first also. Last January we tried to go to the Bay later in the day and they were not allowing any more people in, we were very disappointed.

I used to go to Hanauma Bay very, very early in the morning when there were no crowds, then leave as the people started to stream in, it's MUCH better early in the day. So I agree with the other posters, save Diamond Head for later.

Just remember that Hanauma Bay is closed all day on Tuesday.
