Hamilton Broadway
I would love to take my husband to see Hamilton for his birthday this year. It doesn't have to be not he exact date, I hear they are sold out through the fall 2016. Is there any possible way we could get discount tickets? The prices seem crazy high. Thanks

Oh, but there is a lottery for cancellation tickets from $122 up. If you go every morning early and wait hours in line it is possible that you can get into the lottery to possibly be able to buy those tickets if any become available for the next performance.

Doubt there will be any discounted tickets for at least a year - and very probably more.
The best you can do is to get regular price seats without having to pay a premium. Not aware tickets are any higher than for other hit shows. Nothing says you have to pay for extra high price center front orchestra seats. Have a look at those in the mezzanine.

Nytraveler, you sound as if there are tickets available. For when? Do you know something the rest of us don't know? Even the official site for the show says NO available tickets until July. Repeat -- NONE.
By the way, there's at least one guy who offers a "line sitting" service to get possible cancellation tickets. He charges $25 for the first hour and $15 each additional hour. 5 hours seems usual. But he's completely booked to line sit through April. And even when you pay him., there's no guarantee you'll get tickets.

The only true discount tickets available are ones from the lottery or standing room only. For each performance, they give away twenty-one $10 front row seats. Each winner may buy up to two seats. The lottery draws hundreds of people, and you can start entering 2 1/2 hours before the performance. Obviously odds of winning are low.
After the lottery, they also raffle off $40 standing room only tickets - if available. (They use the same lottery submissions.) These are positioned behind the last row of the orchestra, but there is no guarantee any will be available for a given performance. I've been present when several were, and also when there was no standing room at all.
As NeoPatrick mentioned, you can also wait in the cancellation line for regular priced tickets, which are typically located in the orchestra. These are first-come, first-served, and it's not unusual for some people who arrive as early as 6 a.m. But since it depends on tickets being released, you could potentially be there until close to curtain, and there's never a guarantee tickets will be available. But when they are, they tend to be very good orchestra seats, and if you're offered the $477 premium tickets, you can turn them down and wait to see if $177 ones become available without losing your place in line.
If you're local, you can also go to the box office and see if they have any box seats left for an upcoming performance. These are not sold online (except for resale) and can potentially still be found if you're flexible about the date and number needed. (My former colleague just bought one for June.) But again, those are still very limited.
If you want to go this year, and don't want to pay resale, your best option is probably to wait until sales open for November and December, when tickets starting somewhere around $77 for the rear mezzanine (if prices hold true to previous seat blocks) will become available. But you'll need to be quick, because they will sell out extremely quickly.

Oh, I forgot to mention, there ARE regular-priced tickets still available for July through October, as NeoPatrick pointed out. But most of those are premium $477 seats. You can try stalking the Ticketmaster page regularly and hoping for a release of a few tickets (I bought two side orchestra non-premium tickets for September last week.), but the odds of finding those, or similarly priced partial view orchestra ones, are still low.
Again, for seats under $100, you'll need to wait for the next block of seats to be released.

We had a very short window to go see Hamilton over Labor Day weekend. We went to stub hub, and paid a relatively small premium for very good seats. So Don't Rule out the resale opportunities through stub hub or even Ticketmaster (I believe Ticketmaster is the "official" reseller for these tickets)

That doesn't seem to compute
(The tickets may seem expensive, but that is what Broadway tickets cost)

I was assuming the OP would be willing to go late this year. Obviously if she wants to go sooner the only realistic option (I don't count standing in line for hours for a small chance of getting $10 tickets) is to pay a premium to a reseller.

Yes, the most realistic options for tickets before November is to pay $477 for regular, premium orchestra tickets through the box office/Ticketmaster or to look for resale tickets through somewhere like Ticketmaster or Stubhub. (You can find resale tickets in the mezzanine for less than the non-resale $477 orchestra seats.) But definitely no discounts.
As I wrote above, for direct, non-resale tickets for less (starting at $77), your only real option is to wait until tickets for Nov/Dec are on sale.
(Just to clarify, you don't wait hours and hours for the $10 lottery. That's for the cancellation line. The lottery opens 2 1/2 hours before curtain, and winners are drawn 2 hours before curtain. It's fine for a lark if you're local and want to try (or when the Ham4Ham shows were live), but yes, certainly not realistic for anyone wanting set tickets.

Yes, but janisj, that could also be because the OP is only seeing the $477 tickets on sale right now and is what she's referring to as crazy high. (Pick any dates between July and Oct and that's all you'll find direct from Ticketmaster.) Those are premium seats, but if the OP is willing to pay $77-177, those may be possible for later in the year.
Now if the OP just wants inexpensive discount tickets for this show, then you're right, that's simply not happening.

kureiff's report -
"...so I ended up purchasing tickets from Stub Hub for Saturday night (expensive). I booked airline tickets, and a hotel, and all of a sudden we were going to NYC for our first time and seeing Hamilton."
She didn't say how expensive (expensive) was but she may have purchased originally less expensive tickets - although now marked up by a reseller.
You won't find discount tickets anytime soon but you may be able to find tickets less than $477 on StubHub.
Wicked has been running for over a decade on Broadway and still isn't discounted, so you may have a long wait for "discount" tickets for Hamilton.

FYI, Ticketmaster opened up several orchestra and front row, front mezzanine regular priced $177 tickets for dates in September and October today. Last I checked there were still some available, but doubt they'll be there long.

Do beware of counterfeit tickets. They are, according to this article in the NY Times, showing up on a regular basis now.

Me and my two daughters were on the phone January 21 when the released a new batch of tickets. We needed 5 tickets. At first we got 3 rochester $340 each then when I kept trying, there suddenly were 3 for $199 in the first mezzanine.
We are excited and plan to sell one of the $340 tickets. Expensive but for a special birthday present for my husband and had to be a specific date when my family is in town. excited!!
