"Grown Up" Bars in Manhattan

I've seen several posts on this board from middle-aged posters looking for nightlife options in the city. The NY Times has compiled a list of bars in the city that cater to (or attract) a mature crowd.

http://travel.nytimes.com/2007/03/11...tml?ref=travel

Bar Room at the Modern

Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle Hotel

Blue Bar at the Algonquin Hotel

Carnegie Club, 156 West 56th Street

Club Macanudo, 26 East 63rd Street.

Four Seasons Restaurant, 99 East 52nd Street

King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel, 2 East 55th Street, (212)

Velvet Cigar Lounge, 80 East Seventh Street (near First Avenue), (212) 533-5582; and 174 Broadway (near Driggs Avenue), in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn,

Wolfgang's Steakhouse, 4 Park Avenue (East 33rd Street)

Nice list, but I'm somewhat surprised it doesn't include the Campbell Apartment at Grand Central.

Oh. They're renovating it? Is it closed now?

They renovated it overnight without closing.

I also seem to recall reading the mural from the King Cole bar is out being refurbished but I think they have a "fake" in it's place.

Also the Flute Bar 2 locations 1 off Broadway in the 50's and one near the Flatiron Building.

I think the website is www.flutebar.com.

To this list, I'd add The Algonquin on W. 44th and Bill's on E. 54th (Madison.)

From a decor point of view, Campbell fit (when it was open). But in reality it was filled with noisy communters and did not fit the Times' criteria.

I love the Campbell Apt, but don't find it to be filled with noisy commuters, rather, a younger crowd than the Times criteria.

Just went to a private dinner at the Modern and I have to say the bar was hopping!

True, it is a younger crowd as well -- noisy young commuters.

(I used to meet suburbs friends there often with their fellow commuters.)

Hmmm. I must have been there an odd evening. At 50 something at the time I felt like a youngster -- I was one of the younger people there. It seemed to be filled my middle aged to mainly older couples and businessmen nearing retirement.

I've been to Campbell, oh, 20-30 times over the past years ... and the crowd (from 5-8ish) is consistently young commuters.

After they clear out, the old folks just might take over!
