"Grown Up" Bars in Manhattan

I've seen several posts on this board from middle-aged posters looking for nightlife options in the city. The NY Times has compiled a list of bars in the city that cater to (or attract) a mature crowd.

Nice list, but I'm somewhat surprised it doesn't include the Campbell Apartment at Grand Central.

Love the Cambell Apt as we wait for out late night train to Bronxville!

lizziea06 Mar 12th, 2007 02:21 PM

Agree - I'm anxious to see it post renovation!

NeoPatrick Mar 12th, 2007 02:36 PM

Oh. They're renovating it? Is it closed now?

mclaurie Mar 12th, 2007 03:25 PM

They renovated it overnight without closing.

I also seem to recall reading the mural from the King Cole bar is out being refurbished but I think they have a "fake" in it's place.

Also the Flute Bar 2 locations 1 off Broadway in the 50's and one near the Flatiron Building.

I think the website is www.flutebar.com.

To this list, I'd add The Algonquin on W. 44th and Bill's on E. 54th (Madison.)

I can't wait for the Oak Bar to open back up!

From a decor point of view, Campbell fit (when it was open). But in reality it was filled with noisy communters and did not fit the Times' criteria.

I love the Campbell Apt, but don't find it to be filled with noisy commuters, rather, a younger crowd than the Times criteria.

Just went to a private dinner at the Modern and I have to say the bar was hopping!

Gekko Mar 13th, 2007 08:29 AM

True, it is a younger crowd as well -- noisy young commuters.

(I used to meet suburbs friends there often with their fellow commuters.)

NeoPatrick Mar 13th, 2007 01:58 PM

Hmmm. I must have been there an odd evening. At 50 something at the time I felt like a youngster -- I was one of the younger people there. It seemed to be filled my middle aged to mainly older couples and businessmen nearing retirement.

lisettemac Mar 13th, 2007 02:00 PM

So you must have been that handsome older guy who was hitting on me, patrick??? ;=)

Gekko Mar 13th, 2007 05:45 PM

I've been to Campbell, oh, 20-30 times over the past years ... and the crowd (from 5-8ish) is consistently young commuters.

After they clear out, the old folks just might take over!
