Anyone know of any Grocery stores nearby our hotel Waikiki Joy on Oahu that will save us money? Plan to take bus many places but will have a car one day.

Also staying on big Island at ohana keauhouhou grocery stores there? will have a car here.

I don't know of any grocery stores, but I DO know it will cost you plenty to prepare your own food. As expensive as the restaurants are, it usually is not cheaper and can actually be more expensive to buy your own food.
We've heard of people paying $9.00 a gallon for milk.

The many ABC Stores throughout Waikiki sell sell food, but their prices are outrageous.

You'll save money by going to Foodland (back side of Ala Moana Shopping Center, ground floor), and using your car to lug the stuff back to your room.

Some of our grocery items may seem high-priced to folks from the mainland, unless you come from the west coast -- in which case you'll be surprised how similar the costs are.

In addition to the Foodland at Ala Moana shopping center, there's also a Food Pantry at 2375 Kuhio Ave, which is not too far from the Wakiki Joy. They'll have a much bigger selection then the ABC stores.

On the day you have a car you're better off going to a Star Market or a Safeway. There are locations fairly close to your hotel, just ask the concierge. The prices will probably be cheaper than the Ala Moana Foodland or the stores right in Waikiki.

Not sure about groceries, but theier is a lot of inexpensive food to be had. I love Korean BBQ and their were many place with Korean food, Japanese Noodles, or plate lunches that I thought were downright cheap. The International market has a food court, and McDonalds and Denny's are always a bargain. Why cook when you are on vacation?

On University and King is a Star Market. 1/2 gallon of milk is about $3.50 I believe. Then also hit the Sat farmers market at KCC.

If you go to Safeway or Foodland, be sure to sign up for their membership cards. It costs you nothing and will save you a lot of money as you shop for groceries!

I know this is a very old post but have current information I wanted to add. And grocery store location is something I NEVER saw mentioned in the dozens of free tourist guides and magazines all over town (duh, i know that's because you're supposed to go to the restaurants -LOL).

Food Pantry is at the corner of Kuhio and Walina, a block or so from the canal. They have normal variety of foods available, also some cosmetics, clothes, souveniers. Not everything is so expensive as people above are making it sound, and it definitely is cheaper than many of the restaurants as long as you have a kitchenette for some easy prep.

Nearby Saint Germain bakery also on Kuhio near Seaside is very good.

Interestingly enough the ABC stores were cheaper on certain items. So although the ABC selection is not as varied it was a better deal for Kraft cheddar cheese, quart of guava juice, and bottle of white wine (the only 3 things that were exactly the same that i compared).
