Grand Marais

Any suggestions for lodging in Grand Marais? Would like something on the Lake Superior. Thanks for your help!

If you mean Michigan, our favorite place is the North Shore Lodge. It was under new ownership last year, with much needed maintenance being done. It addition to Lake Superior just over the dune outside your door, they have an indoor pool, hot tub and sauna. You are also right next to the Lighthouse Museum in the old Coast Guard building.

I recommend staying in the single story section since you have cross ventilation. They have no air-conditioning. This is a great place to see the Northern Lights if you get lucky.

If you mean Grand Marais, MN I highly recommend the Best Western Superior Inn. We had a room with a jacuzzi and fire place and it overlooks the lake and is right downtown. There is also a place called Aspen Inn which is near the water but not as good a view and right downtown there is Shoreline Hotel and East Bay Hotel, both which are older. I know the East Bay built a new wing a few years ago but we have never stayed at either place. The Harbor Inn is also right on the harbor and has rooms. Don't know what they are like either but it has been there many years. The restaurant at Harbor Inn is very good and if you like pizza try Sven & Ole's. It's yummy! Also enjoy going out to Naniboujou Lodge (about 18 miles East of town) for lunch or dinner. Food was excellent. If you are going up the Gunflint Trail, the Gunflint Lodge has a wonderful Dining Room. A long way from Grand Marais tho. There are other motels and cabins in the area but these are our favorites as they are right in town and you can walk right from the motels/hotels. We are going there at the end of July and we are looking forward to our visit. Enjoy your trip!! If you have any other questions, just ask and I will try to help you out as we go there often.

Thanks so much for the replies back!

We do currently have a reservation at the North Shore Lodge and I'am glad to hear good things about it. I do believe we are on the second floor at the end, so I'll call about a different room.

Do you know anything about Big Bay, MI near Marquette? My husband and I love Grand Marais, but were interested in Big Bay.

thanks again.

I've only seen Big Bay from the water. It is a little out of the way but I believe it has a b & b in an old lighthouse.
