We're traveling to Maui in March for my brother-in-law's wedding.

My sister-in-law lived in Lahaina in the early 1980s. She wants to show all of us where she used to live, and said she would like to snorkel while we're around that area.

I vaguely remember reading that snorkeling isn't that great around Lahaina, but I could be wrong.

Can you all recommend good places to snorkel around Lahaina, or would we be better off doing it near where we're staying in Wailea?

DT Fleming Park, as I recall, had good snorkeling:

I imagine Wailea areas might be better, or a few miles down the road toward Makena -- but BlackRock might be the closest to Lahaina with easy access. I also like the beach at Kapalua.

Good snorkeling from the Kamaole Beach Parks in South Kihei on south through Wailea and Makena. One of the nicest spots to see sea turtles is on the left side of the beach (facing out to sea) in front of the Makena Beach Resort. The Kamaoles have lifeguards, restrooms, showers, picnic benches and *shade*. You can dine with a view by bringing a picnic or fetching food from the many spots just across Kihei Road.

The best snorkeling we did was from a boat. We were supposed to go to Molokini but it was too windy so they took us to Shark Fin Cove off the Lanai coast. It was a great spot- we were the only boat there, lots of fish and coral formations. Loved it !!

Thanks, everyone, for your recommendations! Sunbum1944, I'd love to do one of those snorkeling trips, but none of us have the time or money to take one on this trip.

Honolua Bay has great snorkelling but the entrance to the water can be a little tricky as there are many stones but once out it is very good. You have to park along the road and then walk thru a wood to get to the beach.

La Perouse Bay which is past Wailea has amazing snorkelling.

You can see turtles in Napili Bay, right from the beach.

Have snorkeled up by rocks/jetty - by the old Sheraton - Kaanapali - and it is great. Also good at Fleming and at Honolua Bay is incredible - if you can get a flat day.

La Perouse Bay - at the south end of Kiehei is also terrific, again, depending on the visibility.

Go early if you can - less wind and surf.

And while I took the ferry over to Lanai - and didn't snorkel - they have some great snorkeling there and we also enjoyed snorkeling/diving on Molokai, as well as Big Island, Oahu and our favorite island - Kauai - aka - the Garden Isle.
