I was just in St. Pete this past week and fell in love with the stretch of keys from Anna Maria to Lido Key. The beach in Coquina was quite picturesqe and I got some great pics of the south end just before heading over the bridge to Longboat Key. I was also pleasantly surprised to find a lovely area for shopping and dining at Lido Key, I think the name of the area is St. Armandes. If you go there, make sure to stop in at the wine shop next door to the Blue Dolphin Grill and sample the lovely local wines....hic!
However, all this talk might be useless if Hurricane Frances decides to visit the area before you do. The most recent reports show her heading that way. If you are going there to look at investment property, I suppose after a hurricane would be a good time -- you can see how it weathers the storm.
If all else fails, catch a quick flight from Tampa to Key West. Key West escaped both recent hurricanes!
Have fun!
