Time Out Magazine is an excellent suggestion...tells all the activities & events going on in the city each month.
NY Magazine is good, but as it's a weekly, it's more than your budget for a subscription.
Starbucks cards are indispensible!
Shopping at WalMart is not a uniquely NYC experience. It's generally no fun either.

Time Out is a great idea- also, The New Yorker, again educators and students get a super-special subscription rate. In the front section it lists what is going on at the museums, galleries, music scene and clubs and there's also a column called...Table for One..? that highlights a sometimes little-known gem of a restaurant. Also, when you buy the year, you get everything else that makes it a great magazine, ie still plenty of good use once he leaves NYC.

Oh, I *LOVE* the idea of a magazine subscription. I'm sending the URLs to his wife, who will have a better idea than I which one might be best. Time Out, New Yorker, the jazz or classical stuff--all sound wonderful. This guy is so "open," to use a trite word, to any and all experiences that a listing of what's going on sounds perfect. Two of his sons live in the city--both musicians--so he follows them around, from Juilliard to Blue Note to the Cotton Club--and they have a fantastic time being discovered and discovering others.
(Personally, I looked at the Time Out website and printed out the recent restaurant picks for the next time we go to the city! Can't wait.)
The CDs from the Opera Guild also sound excellent--not my cup of tea, but right up his alley. Thanks for the suggestions, chicgal! I'm asking the kids about those, bec/ I don't have any clue what is already in his collection.
As he is a university-type, I'll do further checking on educational discounts. He's staying in the "Loft," a facility in the Flatiron District maintained by the university; he'll be on a mini-sabbatical, acting as the caretaker for the semester.
And, yes, I know, $25.00 isn't much money--anywhere--but it's what the family decided on to accommodate the younger generation, for whom $25 *does* matter. As I said, we're certainly willing to waive that.
Wal-Mart! God knows we have scads of them in NC; I'm delighted to hear they haven't yet made inroads into NYC. Not a place I'd willingly visit...
Thanks SO much for the replies, they are greatly appreciated. I only wish I had 5 months (minimum) to live in New York!

If he likes the theater, a good gift would be a TKTS gift certificate. They have $25 ones.
