Going to this area lst wk. of August. Family of 5 (kids ages l9, l4, l0) Staying in cabin between Gat./p.forge. Am scared now after reading all the negative comments and already have one night's deposit on cabin. Is is really that bad?????????????

How scary can visiting the gorgeous Smoky Mountains be?? Apart from enjoying the amazing beauty of the mountains, if you're afraid to venture onto the main drag in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, then don't go! That's where all the action is; i.e., dining, souvenir shops, attractions, etc. My kids LOVED it, although in August it will be crowded. Sevierville is a lot quieter, and not so "scary."

I am confused as to what has you worried. Have you seen negative comments about where you're staying or where you'll be visiting? We have stayed in Gatlinburg with our kids & really enjoyed it. They liked searching for gems in buckets of dirt.The main drag is full of stuff to browse through. Dollywood was very clean & wholesome but the rides were fun too. My brother stays regularly in cabins near Cade's Cove. It is his favorite spot since it is less commercial.At least it should be cooler there. We are baking here in Louisiana!

Jim, I don't know exactly what you have read or heard re/ Gatlinburg-Smokie Mtns. area. I don't think you have anything to be worried about. The place will be very crowded, lots of traffic, etc. but so are most other popular vacation spots. Go and enjoy.

Jim, Jim, Jim -- everything is going to be fine. Pidgeon Forge is the most incredible tourist trap I have ever seen [and they don't even serve any alcohol].
Gatlinburg is another story, even though it is also a tourist trap it has a little more substance [more maature??]. Be sure and go to the Ripley's aquarium -- it is impressive.

Be sure you drive out to Cade's Cove. That is an incredible drive and there are some good hiking trails out there as well. We saw a bear and lots of deer up close.
