Gaslamp District, San Diego

My 23 yr old daughter and I will be in the San Diego Gaslamp District over this Friday and Saturday night. She will be working the boat show, so, we only have evenings to play.
What should we do?

There is lots to do in the Gaslamp. Clubs, great restaurants (especially Italian, and not cheap). You have Seaport Village nearby for shopping, and Horton Plaza of course. The area is jam packed for fun. We were just there for New Year's Eve and had a blast. People everywhere. The people in San Diego are so nice. But for two nights, there is plenty to do in downtown. You can walk much of it, but there are some areas I wouldn't walk alone.

Go to this website for more info:

Look up neighborhoods and then Gaslamp or downtown.

What hotel are you staying in?

We are staying at the Grand Horton Hotel, what street should we walk down at night, where will all the people be?

Thanks,
Donnae

Ask the front desk at your hotel how to get to the center of the district from your hotel. Gaslamp is more than just one street - it's several blocks of activity. Should be tons of people in the whole area on a Friday or Saturday night, hard to miss.

5th Avenue is the main drag. And the street that you are on is right across the street from Horton Plaza. Broadway I think. And next door to the Westgate where we found a great piano bar on NYE to ring in the New Year. You are right in the middle of it all. Have fun. SD is one of my favorite all time cities.

Another great place for live music is Croce's, a club on Fifth. Jim Croce's widow Ingrid runs it. I imagine it will be quite busy this weekend.

The Gaslamp is full of live music venues and a couple of dance clubs as well. Check out the San Diego Nightlife pages here in fodors.com-- most of the info looks up-to-date.

You're topping an original post from three months ago?

Are you heading to the Gaslamp again this weekend? If that is the case, beware because it is the opening weekend at the new ballpark next door to the Gaslamp, so it wil be a zoo down there.

We had a couple of good Mexican meals in the Baja Brew Pub a few years ago, can't be sure they are still there, though.

To add to malvado's post, we went to a restaurant in the Gaslamp for dinner last Saturday. After making the reservation, I was horrified to discover that the Padres were playing an exhibition game in Petco Park. It was sold out and I was sure there would be nowhere to park once the game had begun. Well, there is plenty of parking and it's not too expensive. If you're not going to the ballpark, then don't park too close because the rates go up the closer you are. We parked on 7th Avenue for $10. When you walk, or drive, on 9th, 8th or 7th, you have an awesome view of the inside of the ballpark.

I am going back to the gaslamp the weekend of the 24th. I love this place! My daughter and I had a great meal at flamenco type restaurant, with great food and dancers, and, great sangria!
The hard rock was fun to visit.
Taking my morning runs around the gaslamp was great fun!
I cant wait to get back!
