GA + Carolinas in 10 days: what to see?

I write from Italy.

We are going to spend 10 days visiting GA and S-N Carolina from 14 to 24 August.

Which are the best places that we cannot miss?

We are interested in "understanding" history and culture of the place we visit and we want to see what "must be seen" including parks, museums...etc.

Give us any help.

Grazie, arrivederci.

Gianni

Gianni,
Consider researching the destinations link, make your selections & then ask for opinions on the forum. As one from the NE US who has lived in NC & GA, there is either a lot to see or not much - depending upon your interests and tolerance. Atlanta is a melting pot and quite interesting. You should start your search there. Good luck & happy travels.

In SC you must see Charleston and its plantations.Try to spend at least 2 days. There is a wonderful guide named Sara Ragsdale there that would be good for you. And there are beautiful beaches nearby and excellent food.
In Atlanta (GA) there is the High Museum--I don't know what their special exhibit might be now.
In NC (Asheville) you will want to see the Biltmore House--need a day in that area.
You will want to drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway for at least a little distance--beautiful mountain views.
In NC in Winston Salem there is Old Salem, a restored Moravian town from the 1700's. Also the Museum of Southern Decorative Arts is there--excellent.
In NC Charlotte has a fine museum--the Mint Museum of Art and the Mint Museum of Craft+Design. Also an outstanding hands on science museum--Discovery Place.
In Cherokee NC there is an Indian Village--Oconoluftee--in a rather touristy town of Cherokee. Be sure you see the authentic village. There is also a drama of the Cherokee people--Unto These Hills.
I hope this helps

The beautiful city of Savannah is a vacation destination in itself.

The Golden Isles of Georgia in the Brunswick area are comprised of Jeckyl Island where the Vanderbilts and their peers vacationed at the turn of the century, Sea Island where the elite vacation today, and St Simons. Historic sites dot all these islands.

In Atlanta, I hope to one day visit Jimmy Carter's Presidential Library and The World of Coco-Cola. The Wren House (home of Joel Chandler Harris) and the Atlanta Zoo are highly regarded tourist sites. I assume the Clyclorama (an art in the round presentation of the Battle of Atlanta) is still functional. Stone Mountain.

Oh...my...such a broad question...I could go on for pages...and I only know Georgia.

Gianni,

there are some great suggestions listed above. I agree that you should definitely see Charleston SC.

Addtionally, you may want to visit Kitty Hawk in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. That was the sight of the first powered flight. There is a good museum and presentation there. Also, the sand dunes are spectacular.

The Outer Banks are a series of thin barrier islands so far east, it's a little difficult to get to, but well worth the trip.

A few other points of interest about the Outer Banks:

The Lost Colony in Manteo--a play put on each night about the fate of the first colony in America; they disappeared, and the mystery is unsolved to this day.

Lighthouses--there are several all along the Outer Banks, including one that was recently moved about 1/2 mile!

Ocracoke--a small fishing village where you can still detect a trace of an Elizabethan English accent when the locals talk.

It's a beautiful and unique area. One warning though--you may not have enough time to travel to both the mountains of western NC and the outer banks in eastern NC. They are separated by a distance of approximately 400 miles.

Have a great time!

Our family visited Italy this summer and had a wonderful time. One mistake we made is that we tried to see too much (Sirmione, Venice, Carrara, Pisa, Lucca, Florence and Rome) in too little time.
I live in North Carolina and can tell you that you will be spending all your time traveling if you try to see the best of NC, SC and Georgia in only 10 days.
If you are flying into Atlanta, concentrate on that city, Stone Mountain, Augusta (if you like golf) and Savannah.
If you are flying into Charlotte, head to Asheville and the mountains.
If you are going to be closer to the coast, don't miss Charleston, SC (one of my favorite places), and perhaps one of the resorts, such as Hilton Head, Wild Dunes or Kiawah. You could also venture to Savannah if you concentrate all your time on the coast.
Happy planning!

Ditto on Charleston--it is incredible and one of my all-time favorite places!

As far as Ga--there is alot to see and do just in the Atlanta area, it would probably be hard to venture to all the other mentioned places if you are planning to go to N-SC unless you hit some of them en route. I will mention a few places in HotLanta--High Museum; Atlanta Botanical Gardens; Gone with the Wind Museum (haven't been there though); CNN Center; Olympic Park (free concerts on Friday afternoon); Turner Field to a BRaves game; Carter Center; King Center for Nonviolent Social Change (haven't been there either, but have always wanted to); Atlanta Zoo--Cyclorama is right next door in Grant Park. That is a pretty mixed bag things to do in Atlanta.

I would focus primarily on the coast. Start @ the botom of the Outer Banks & going down the coast stop in Wilmington, NC (Go around Myrtle Beach) & hit Charleston, Beaufort & Savannah. I would avoid Atlanta @ all costs. If you wish to include the mountains I would focus on the Asheville area. This would work especially well if you were flying in & out of Charlotte as it is only 2 hours away. Hope this helps.

My two favorite locations are Savannah, Georgia, and the Outer Banks, North Carolina. Charleston is also wonderful.
You have received very good advice here. Have a wonderful trip!
